Cañedo: Church, History and Hiking Trails

Cañedo is home to the Gothic Church of Santa María de Cañedo, a single-nave building with three bays and a straight-ended chancel.

Culture and History

At the Gospel side of Santa María de Cañedo, a private chapel was added at the beginning of the 17th century, donated by Juan Fernández de la Peña. The main altarpiece is a Neoclassical work from the beginning of the 19th century. It contains twelve oil-painted panels from an older altarpiece. Its central niche houses a Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century. The altarpiece also contains a Calvary scene from the mid-16th century. The main altarpiece and its paintings were restored in 1984 by the Taller Itinerante de Restauración.

Cañedo is home to the historic Antigua Venta en el Camino de los Castellanos inn, dating from 1754. It is connected with the Camino de los Castellanos. The village is also home to the La Peña and Zorrilla heraldic houses. An old chestnut tree marks the boundary between the districts of Cañedo de Arriba and Cañado de Abajo.

Through Juan López Campillo's use of the valley as a headquarters for attacks on French troops, Cañedo is connected with the history of Soba during the Napoleonic Wars. Another historical connection concerns the Carlist Wars, particularly the period from 1870 to 1876. The local festival of Nuestra Señora de Cañedo is associated with 8 September.

Nature and Hiking

The Las Cabas viewpoint is located on the road to Puerto de la Sía, approximately 3 km from La Gándara, and offers views of La Gándara, Cañedo, Quintana and the rest of the municipality. Road CA-664 is signposted as “Acceso a Cañedo”.

A route map for the Parque Natural de los Collados del Asón is available through the tourist information provided by the municipality of Soba. From Cañedo, the Camino a Busquemao route follows an old path that connected Soba with the province of Burgos.
