Lanzas Agudas: Trails, Beech Forests and Culture

Hiking and Trails

A route through the Bosque del Balgerri begins in Lanzasagudas. Its starting point is in the upper part of the village, El Lugar, in Lanzasagudas. From there, the route leads through the beech forest and reaches the Sarramiana River after approximately half an hour on foot. The duration is given as an approximate walking time and therefore remains a guideline for your own planning. The approximate half hour refers to the section leading to the Sarramiana River, not to the length of the entire route; within the Bosque del Balgerri, the route described connects the starting point at El Lugar with this named section of the river. Lanzasagudas is also an access point to the Senda del Guarda. The area around the village therefore features both the route through the Bosque del Balgerri and access to the Senda del Guarda as named trail connections.

History

The GR 123 is also part of the area's historical heritage. The trail was historically used by muleteers. These muleteers traded between Burgos and the coastal communities on the Cantabrian Sea. The historic route thus connects the inland with the coastal communities and preserves the memory of a time when muleteers carried out trade between these areas. In this context, Burgos and the Cantabrian Sea are the two geographical reference points of the recorded trade.

Nature and Landscape

The Bosque Balgerri is considered the largest beech forest in Bizkaia. This classification refers to the beech forest within Bizkaia. The Sierra de Ordunte is also located in the regional surroundings of Lanzasagudas. It is a Special Area of Conservation and has been designated as a Natura 2000 site. The area includes beech forests, so the connection to the Bosque Balgerri is also reflected in the regional landscape. The Sierra de Ordunte also features wetlands. Beech forests and wetlands are therefore among the explicitly named landscape features of this regional setting.

Mountains

Alto de Zalama is a mountain in the surroundings of Lanzasagudas. Other named mountains are located in the wider regional surroundings: Alen is a mountain there, as are Betaio and Peña de Igaña.
