Kurtzea: Discover Kukuzburu and Galdakao

Nature and trails

The Kukuzburu route is 10.9 kilometres long and begins at Kurtzeko Plaza. It leads to the iron-rich spring of Uraburu and then descends to the Elorritxueta recreational area. In addition to the summit of Kukuzburu, several bunkers from the Línea P military defence line can also be seen. This line was established after the 1936 war.

The route therefore successively leads to a natural destination, a recreational area and visible remnants of the military defence line. The iron-rich spring of Uraburu is part of the route, as is the descent to Elorritxueta. At Kukuzburu, the summit and the neighbouring bunkers also come into view. The route thus combines named landscape features with a historical monument, without presupposing any other locations or buildings.

The Travesía por el Ganguren is 18.4 kilometres long and also begins at Kurtzeko Plaza. This route offers the possibility of walking along the entire Ganguren ridge; the Travesía por el Ganguren also reaches the summit of Kukuzburu.

The Ganguren ridge forms a separate destination within the route. Walking along the entire ridge and the additionally reached summit of Kukuzburu are part of the description of this Travesía. Both named routes start at Kurtzeko Plaza, but lead to different landscape features: on the Kukuzburu route, Uraburu, Elorritxueta and the Línea P bunkers lie along the way, while the Travesía por el Ganguren takes in the ridge and the summit of Kukuzburu.

Culture and local life

Galdakao Town Hall stands at Kurtzeko Plaza. The building was constructed in the mid-18th century and is regarded as a Baroque town hall from that period. Frontón Kurtzea is also located at Kurtzeko Plaza. Training sessions take place there from Monday to Thursday; games are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The town hall and the frontón are therefore located in the same square, but belong to different aspects of the townscape: the town hall refers through its construction date to the mid-18th century and is classified as a Baroque town hall from that period. The frontón is characterised by its weekly schedule. Training sessions are scheduled from Monday to Thursday, while Friday, Saturday and Sunday are reserved for games.

The church of Santa María de Galdakao is located in the La Cruz neighbourhood. It was built in 1896. La Cruz is therefore another named part of the town, while the church bears the name Santa María de Galdakao and dates from 1896.

Kurtzea/La Cruz is listed as one of the stations or stops on line 3 of the FMB–Txorierri railway line. The name combines the place name Kurtzea with La Cruz and also specifies its association with line 3 of the FMB–Txorierri railway line.
