Discover Villanañe: History, Nature and Culture

Villanañe is located near the courses of the Omecillo and Tumecillo rivers. A settlement stood on the slopes of Monte Medropio in the Barrio de Arriba area of Villanañe. It dates from the late Bronze Age or the Iron Age. The settlement continued to exist during the Roman period. The chronological sequence therefore extends from the late Bronze Age or Iron Age through to the Roman period.

History

Inside the Torre de los Varona, traditional rooms with furniture, wallpaper, ceramics and Kutxak chests have been preserved. The furnishings therefore include both the rooms themselves and several different elements of traditional interior decor.

Getting there

If you are heading to the Torre de los Varona, the official access route from Vitoria-Gasteiz follows the N-1. This road runs in the direction of Madrid. The route then continues via the A-2622. At Villanañe, the access road to the complex branches off. This access sequence connects Vitoria-Gasteiz with the turn-off at Villanañe via these two roads.

Nature

The Angosto recreational area is 1 km from the centre of Villanañe. It is located next to the Santuario de Angosto. The area can be reached by road. The stated distance refers to the centre of Villanañe and not to another location reference. Angosto is surrounded by dense woodland. This woodland is located around the centuries-old Encina Juradera. The trees form the described woodland around this single old tree.

The Encina Juradera is regarded as a special solitary tree. The tree has been preserved. Assemblies were held beneath it. Its significance is therefore connected with the preserved tree and the former gatherings held beneath its crown.

Culture

The Santuario de Angosto is a Gothic church. The church was built in the first half of the 14th century. Inside the Santuario there is an altarpiece. The altarpiece consists of six sections. It depicts the story of the Virgin Mary. The religious complex therefore includes a Gothic architectural style, a historical date and the six-part artwork with its religious subject matter.

The Santuario is located in the area of Villanañe. It stands on the Tumecillo. The Santuario is a place of pilgrimage. It is also a place of religious worship.
