Discover Legutio: History, Forests and Reservoirs
On 15 April 1333, Alfonso XI of Castile granted Legutio the title of Villa Real. Several caseríos corresponding to Basque-Atlantic rural architecture stand around Legutio’s historic centre. A directly linked place is Elosu.
Culture and History
The Arco del Cristo is the only remaining gateway of the formerly walled town of Legutio. The Church of San Blas is a Romanesque church dating from the 14th century. Its tower and portal are Renaissance additions, and San Blas also has a Churrigueresque altarpiece. At the Museo-taller de Alfarería Tradicional Vasca, visitors can watch potters working in the production workshops and receive explanations of their techniques and working methods. The San Blas patron saint’s festival in Legutio takes place on 3 February. The Fiesta de las Cofradías is celebrated on the Sunday after 8 September, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary.
The Albertia Memory Trail begins at Legutio’s old cemetery and passes through beech forest to the trenches of the Spanish Civil War. The 3.2-km Joseren baso Memory Trail leads from the area around the Albina Reservoir to a fortification from the Spanish Civil War. The Txabolapea Memory Trail begins at the Church of San Blas and leads to a pine forest where trenches and bomb traces from the Spanish Civil War have been preserved.
Nature and Landscape
A walking path from Legutio passes through oak forest to the 868-metre-high summit of Monte Albertia. Monte Albertia offers a natural viewpoint overlooking the Urrunaga, Albina and Zadorra reservoirs. The Kanterazarreta viewpoint is 1.5 kilometres from Legutio on the road to Aramaio and offers views of the Urrunaga Reservoir and the Anboto and Gorbeia mountains. The Urrunaga Reservoir is part of the Natura 2000 network. The Zadorra reservoir system serves waterbirds as a wintering and breeding area and as a resting and feeding place along their migration routes.
Activities
The Campo de Regatas on the Urrunaga Reservoir enables water skiing and has space for sailing boats up to 12 metres long. The reservoirs around Legutio are suitable for rowing, as well as recreation and relaxation. The approximately 10-km stage of the GR-38 connects Legutio with Otxandio. The GR-38 stage from Legutio to Otxandio leads as far as the Albina Reservoir along paths through oak, beech and cypress forests. The Vuelta al monte Albertia route is rated easy on foot and is fully cyclable; its difficulty level by bicycle is described as easy to moderate. Club de Golf Larrabea has an 18-hole course that runs through forests, along rivers and across meadows.
