Costitx combines archaeological remains with rural culture and an annual flower festival. The prehistoric sanctuary of Son Corró is at the heart of its ancient history, while a museum, an astronomical observatory and the Feria Costitx en Flor offer further insights. You can choose different focuses for your stay: explore archaeological sites, discover local traditions or plan your visit around the festival on 1 May.

Archaeological sites around Costitx

Son Corró is a post-Talayotic sanctuary dating from around the 4th century BC, discovered in 1894. The approximate date places the site in prehistoric times, while the year of its discovery belongs to the more recent history of its study. Costitx’s archaeological heritage extends beyond the sanctuary: 19 sites have been discovered within the municipality, scattered around the present-day town centre.

One way to explore several archaeological sites is the signposted Sencelles–Costitx route. It includes Son Corró and other sites and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. If you prefer walking or would like to explore Costitx by bike, you can take these options into account when planning. No information on the route’s length or duration is available here.

Museum and observatory

Costitx’s Casal de Cultura houses both a museum and bronze replicas of the bull heads found at Son Corró. The replicas provide a tangible link between the sanctuary and the town’s cultural offerings: they show which finds are associated with Son Corró, so you do not have to learn about its history solely by visiting the site. If you are interested in archaeology, you can therefore consider a visit to the museum as a cultural highlight in its own right.

The astronomical observatory of Mallorca in Costitx offers a different perspective. A guided visit is available by prior arrangement. This is important for planning your trip: a visit requires an advance booking.

Rural culture and enduring traditions

Costitx’s character includes preserved ethnological features related to the use of natural resources, as well as striking rural estates known as possessions. These features point to a rural culture that forms another part of the town alongside its archaeological heritage. For visitors interested not only in individual archaeological sites but also in the use of natural resources and historic rural estates, this offers a distinct focus for discovery.

The archaeological route, the cultural offerings at the Casal de Cultura and the rural heritage cater to different interests. When choosing where to stay, consider which of these aspects of Costitx you would most like your trip to focus on. The Feria Costitx en Flor on 1 May

The Feria Costitx en Flor is an annual event held every year on 1 May. It features the sale of flowers and plants, stalls selling typical products and handicrafts, cultural activities and traditional dances. The Feria is more than a plant market: it brings together goods, culture and local traditions, and could be a reason to discover Costitx at this particular time of year.

If attending on a specific festival date is important to you, you can use 1 May as a fixed point when planning your trip. For a stay outside this date, the archaeological and cultural attractions associated with the sites and institutions mentioned above take centre stage.
