In 2008, Torazu received the Premio al Pueblo Ejemplar de Asturias award. The village combines traditional Asturian architecture, ecclesiastical monuments, local festival traditions and an oak-dominated landscape.

Culture and architecture

The Church of San Martín in Torazu dates from the 17th century. The south portal of the Church of San Martín el Real is Romanesque. The Chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Sienra in Torazu dates from the 18th century and is situated in a centuries-old oak grove. Torazu brings together numerous examples of traditional Asturian buildings, including houses with corridors and galleries. In Los Cuetos, there are examples of so-called Indiano architecture, which is associated with emigration, particularly to Mexico and Argentina.

The religious monuments, traditional forms of housing and the houses mentioned in Los Cuetos thus represent different historical traces within the architectural heritage. The interplay of churches, a chapel, corridors, galleries and Indiano architecture makes the various building forms clearly distinguishable from one another.

Festivals and regional cuisine

El Carmen de Torazu is recognized as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico of the Principality of Asturias. The festival includes a century-old procession of the Ramos, in which residents from the different parts of the village take part in traditional regional dress. The Jira de Incós is an annual local tradition during which residents bring the festivities to a close with a Romería and a cross-country race on the slopes of Monte Incós.

The festival dates and proceedings have different focuses: El Carmen brings the various parts of the village together in a century-old procession, while the Jira de Incós concludes on the slopes of Monte Incós with a Romería and a cross-country race.

At the Festival de la Boroña de forna, Boroñas are baked in traditional Fornas that are more than 300 years old. The festival takes place on the first Sunday in June at the Campu de la Capilla de Nuestra Señora de la Sienra in Torazu. Its program includes a market, music and a procession.

Nature and trails

The paved streets of Torazu extend for approximately 850 meters through the entire village center. Campo de la Sierra is a small forest area dominated by oaks that surrounds Torazu. Robledal de La Sienra is known as an area offering views of twelve municipalities. The Vuelta a Cabranes cycling tour runs from Alto de La Encrucijada to Torazu. The village center, oak woodland, views and cycling tour therefore offer different focuses on exploring the village, the landscape and physical activity.

For planning routes, the forms mentioned differ significantly: the approximately 850 meters in the village center describe a compact route through the village, Campo de la Sierra an oak area surrounding it, and the Vuelta a Cabranes a connection between Alto de La Encrucijada and Torazu. The viewpoint and cycling route add two further perspectives to these spatial relationships.
