San Tirso de Abres: River Trails, Nature and Culture

The Río Eo defines San Tirso de Abres as a fertile river valley with riparian forests. Near San Tirso de Abres, the Río Eo is associated with salmon, trout and sea trout in clear water flowing over a slate bed.

Nature

The riverside recreation area of San Tirso de Abres – El Piñeiro has a path more than 2 kilometres long. It runs parallel to the Río Eo as far as the mouth of the Arroyo del Ramalledo, where it flows into the Río Eo. The path combines proximity to the river with a longer, straight section through the recreation area.

Trails

The Vía Verde del Eo begins in As Veigas and is 7.1 kilometres long. As a linear route, the walking time is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes in one direction. It follows the Río Eo through riparian woodland, as well as through former railway tunnels and across bridges. The length, route format and walking time provide different benchmarks for planning your own day.

The Ruta de A Pena do Encanto, by contrast, is a 4-kilometre circular route with a low level of difficulty. It begins at the San Isidro chapel and follows the stream to the Pena do Encanto waterfall area. The waterfall is associated with a local legend: on Midsummer’s Eve, an enchanted woman emerges from the rock with a golden comb.

The Ruta de los Pañeiros follows a former pilgrimage route to Santiago from El Llano along a riverside path beside the Río Eo. Trout and salmon can be observed along this route.

The three routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in their form and the landscape features along the way. A linear route, a circular route and a riverside path offer different ways to experience the Río Eo and its surroundings. Tunnels, bridges, a stream, a waterfall area and riparian woodland each create their own focus, without the routes merging into a single course.

Culture

The Centro de Interpretación de la Pesca en el Eo is housed in the former public school building of San Tirso de Abres. There, the Río Eo, its species and the relationship between people and the river are explained using various media.

San Salvador has two naves and, on the outside, a central portico with a round arch. San Tirso de Abres also has 156 cabozos, including three of the Ribadeo type.

Local Traditions

The annual Mercado de Verano is held on August weekends in the municipality’s recreation area on the Río Eo. It brings local food producers and craftspeople together there.
