Discover Obaya: Trails, Mills and Festival Traditions

Obaya can be explored in several ways. Nature, culture and events offer different perspectives, ranging from outdoor activity and historic sites to local festivals.

Nature

In 2025, the course of the San Xuan d’Amandi Trail ran through Obaya between Llavares and Peruyeru and was approximately 8 kilometres long. At kilometre 3.5, there was an exclusively liquid refreshment station in Obaya.

The P.R. AS-137 Ruta de los Molinos del Río Profundu covers a 7-kilometre-long, wooded river corridor with the ruins of more than twenty old watermills.

Another hiking route from Villaviciosa leads via Amandi, Fuente de San Juan, the San Antonio Chapel, Llavares and Obaya to the Fuente Los Caños spring. It is 7.82 miles long, designed as an out-and-back route and classified as easy.

Culture

The nearby Ermita de San Martín de Ternín is a Romanesque church on a hilltop with panoramic views over parts of Villaviciosa. Inside, a medieval baptismal font and a pointed triumphal arch have been preserved; after years of deterioration, the church was restored in the 1980s.

The Molín de Obaya is located in the hamlet of Obaya in Amandi, Villaviciosa. The mill stands on a river beside a waterfall, which can be reached from Obaya after a few hundred metres along an uphill lane.

In 2010, the Molín de Obaya was one of the few watermills in Asturias that were still functioning.

Historically, Obaya and Ternín were connected by a shared tradition: a joint espicha was celebrated every year.

Events

The second edition of the San Xuan d’Amandi Trail took place in 2026 over 8 kilometres through La Roza, Llavares, Obaya, Bozanes and Peruyeru. The race therefore included several of the places mentioned along its route.

The programme for San Xuan d’Amandi on 23 June 2026 included, at midnight, a traditional Hoguera de San Xuan with a performance of the Danza de San Xuan d’Amandi by Grupo Folklórico Villaviciosa (Aires de Asturias).

Following the second edition of the San Xuan d’Amandi Trail in 2026, participants and local residents gathered at the festival grounds in Amandi for a traditional bonfire marking St John’s Eve.
