Carrio: Cultural Heritage and Flow Trail

Carrio makes its history visible through distinctive details. The Iglesia de los Remedios church in Carrio was formerly called Santa María de Rimori and was a chapel until the mid-18th century; despite extensive alterations, it retains its original portal and bell gable. A hundred-year-old yew tree stands beside the church.

Culture

The streets of Carrio are also lined with old stone houses featuring traditional covered galleries; some hórreos are several centuries old. The Nuestra Señora de los Remedios patron saint's festival in Carrio takes place on 8 September; its 2023 programme included a procession with bagpipes and drum, a mass in the church of Carrio, and the Puya l’ramu. This places architectural history, festival tradition and industrial heritage side by side as clearly distinguishable approaches to the subject.

A guided walk focusing on Laviana's industrial heritage leads from Carrio to Los Cuarteles. The starting point is the CIDAN in Pola de Laviana; the route is 8 kilometres long and has a medium to low difficulty level. The Senderos del Carbón Flow Trail was created as a loop for mountain bikes; it includes a 3.5-kilometre descent and is considered Spain's first flow trail to be homologated according to IMBA guidelines. The Senderos del Carbón Flow Trail descends the slopes of Monte Carrio and includes numerous bends, jumps, rollers and drops.
