The coastal path in El Franco runs through Castello, Pormenande, Viavélez, Cabo Blanco and the Porcía viewpoint. A coastal branch of the Camino de Santiago leads through El Franco from Castello to Porcía. For planning purposes, the sequence of places along the coastal route and the rural path explicitly stated as being one kilometre long can be compared separately.

For a stay in El Franco, a holiday apartment can be assessed based on your travel dates, preferred room category and cancellation conditions. Those weighing up different travel themes will find that the area offers not only coastal trails and beaches, but also natural, historical and cultural sites that address different aspects of trip planning. This allows practical and thematic considerations to be weighed alongside one another.

Coast and Trails

The pebble beach of Castello is approximately 400 metres long and has ample parking. Porcía Beach is a fine-sand beach shaped by the meanders of the river of the same name and the islets of El Boy. The fishing harbour of Viavélez lies in a maritime village with numerous lanes for strolling and views over the harbour. Significant whaling activity has been documented in the harbour of Viavélez since 1609.

Nature

As Covas da Andía has been designated a natural monument since 2002. The area comprises a dense, shady forest where Atlantic and Mediterranean vegetation intermingle. Mining operations exposed karst passages within the limestone formation at As Covas da Andía. Visits to As Covas da Andía are only possible as part of guided tours and with advance reservation.

The Cascadas de Penadecabras form large waterfalls surrounded by native flora and fauna. From Cabo Blanco, the view extends across the western Asturian coast and part of the Mariña Lucense.

History and Architectural Heritage

The Castro de Cabo Blanco was inhabited from the 4th century BC through the Roman period. In the surviving sections of the fortification at the Castro de Cabo Blanco, the height exceeds 4 metres. The Castro de Cabo Blanco can be reached from Valdepares via a one-kilometre-long rural path.

Casa Pastur, also known as Casa das Quintas, is a centuries-old building and an example of the region’s traditional architecture. The old church is a single-nave building from the 18th century with two side chapels. The Complejo Cultural As Quintas serves as a visitor reception centre for the municipality of El Franco.

Culture

The selection of places also includes La Caridad. The Museo de la Forja is located in Casa de Arte Mohíces at Calle Principado 5 in the centre of A Caridá. The Museo de la Forja displays furniture and household items crafted by hand in its forge.
