More than 30 burial mounds are spread across the Los Llanos and Les Huelgues de San Pablo areas of Monte Areo. This megalithic necropolis is one of the most significant concentrations of burial mounds on the Asturian coast.

Trip planning

For a holiday apartment in Zancornio, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can provide the practical framework for planning the trip. The choice of daily destinations can then follow different focuses: Monte Areo and dolmen, wetlands, historical traces or routes of varying lengths. This makes it possible to organise the stay around different themes without combining the individual places into a single excursion.

Culture and history

The megalithic structures of Monte Areo can be visited freely and free of charge. A steep paved track leads to the plateau where they are located. The easier access to the Cierru Los Llanos tumulus is via the CE-6 Pervera–Ambás road and a turn-off in Barrio Fancornio; from Barrio Fancornio, the route passes the Peña'l Carro natural viewpoint.

The signposted archaeological route of Monte Areo includes the Cierru Los Llanos dolmen field and the Los Bayos de Selmo wetland. It also has a recreational area. The dolmen's burial chamber was built from large quartzite slabs; Cierru Los Llanos is a classic dolmen with a short corridor or portico.

The Gijón–Tabaza stage of the Camino de Santiago crosses Monte Areo and then descends to Santa Eulalia in Carreño. In a deed of donation from 905, Santa Eulalia del Valle appears as a subsidiary church of San Esteban de Guimarán.

Nature and trails

The Monte Areo recreational area includes a viewpoint, access to hiking trails, a road, parking areas, a children's area, barbecue facilities and seating areas with tables. In the surroundings of Monte Areo, the Cañada del Reguerón wetland is home to protected plant communities.

The Aula del Neolítico introduces visitors to Neolithic culture through information panels, interactive elements and audiovisual media. This offering is complemented by reproductions of hunting tools and a reconstruction of a dolmen burial chamber. Different forms of knowledge-sharing and concrete exhibits are therefore presented side by side.

Further routes

From the Centro de Interpretación Rural Guimarán-Valle, Los Pilares de Carreño offers an approximately 15-kilometre, easy circular route with more than 24 tourist attractions in the municipality of Carreño. A route of less than 3.5 kilometres there and back leads from Barrio Falcornio via the Peña’l Carru viewpoint to Cierru Los Llanos. The two route lengths represent different scales for planning a day out; the archaeological route and the Camino de Santiago stage have different thematic focuses. Thus, an extended circular route with several attractions and a shorter there-and-back route stand side by side as clearly distinct route formats.

Iboya can also be explored as another place on the same higher-level itinerary.
