Holiday apartment in El Peralejo – heritage, trails and landscape

El Peralejo lies in the northwestern part of the municipal area of El Castillo de las Guardas and is a historic settlement centre. The village is 10 km from the municipality’s main town. Access to El Peralejo is via the SE-546 turn-off, which branches off from the A-476. The road connection therefore leads into the village via a clearly signposted access road.

Two settlement centres and local heritage

El Peralejo consists of two settlement centres of a similar size: “Peralejo Bajo” and “Peralejo Alto”. They are 300 metres apart. La Casita is located in Peralejo Bajo. Also located in El Peralejo is the Horno de El Peralejo Barrio Alto, which is an ethnological heritage site. The addition “Barrio Alto” is part of the name of this heritage site. A local festival is celebrated in the village in July. Anyone visiting both settlement centres one after the other can plan the 300 metres between Peralejo Bajo and Peralejo Alto as a separate distance.

The Río Agrio and a landscape of steep valleys

The Río Agrio, also known as the Crispinejo, rises near Las Herrerías in the vicinity of El Peralejo. The river passes through areas with rugged terrain and steep slopes. It often runs through deeply cut, narrow valleys. The names Río Agrio and Crispinejo refer to the same river course. The steep banks of the Río Agrio or Crispinejo favour the presence of notable bird species such as eagle owls, eagles and black storks. For wildlife observation, the steep banks with eagle owls, eagles and black storks provide a specific point of reference along the river course.

Hiking and trails in the municipal area

There are currently 70 kilometres of suitable, signposted trails in the municipal area of El Castillo de las Guardas. They form part of a network of trails homologated by the Andalusian Mountaineering, Climbing and Hiking Federation and can be used for outdoor sporting activities. Those exploring the surrounding area on foot will find an extensive network of clearly signposted routes here. The hiking trails in the area around El Castillo de las Guardas include the Camino de Las Cortecillas a Peroamigo y Peralejo. The trail is therefore identified by its own name in the area surrounding the municipality. When planning a hike, it is possible to distinguish between the extensive network of trails in the municipal area and the Camino de Las Cortecillas a Peroamigo y Peralejo in the surrounding area.

Mountain biking and driving route

The mountain biking route “MINAS DEL CASTILLO-PERALEJO-PINAR DE CHICLANA-MINAS DEL CASTILLO” leads from the Reserva towards El Peralejo. On this route, after a section on the road and shortly before the entrance to the village, turn left onto a short but steep climb. The transition from the road section to the climb is therefore before the entrance to the village. When planning the mountain bike ride, this short, steep passage should be treated as a separate section. A driving route through the hamlets of El Castillo de las Guardas leads, among other places, to El Peralejo; the village is one of the points of interest on this route.
