El Chorro provides the southern entrance to the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. Carved out by the Guadalhorce, this canyon is only 10 metres wide in some places and reaches a depth of 700 metres. The rock walls in El Chorro can be up to 300 metres high – a landscape in which paths, rock and watercourse appear closely interconnected.

Landscape

The surroundings of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes include Aleppo pines, stone pines, holm oaks, eucalyptus trees and riverside vegetation. The mountains Sierra de la Pizarra, Sierra de Huma and Sierra de Aguas are located in the vicinity of El Chorro. The Sierra de Baños is also situated near El Chorro. Thus, the landscape is characterised not only by the canyon’s steep rock walls, but also by various mountain ranges and vegetation along the banks.

Hiking and trails

The Caminito del Rey was built between 1901 and 1905 as a service route between the Gaitanejo and Chorro hydroelectric facilities. The trail ends in El Chorro (Álora). The Haza del Río trail offers another perspective on the area’s history: from there, panoramic views extend to the historic remains of the former 10th-century Mozarabic town of Bobastro.

Mountain sports

The Vía Ferrata El Chorro is 650 metres long and has 250 metres of positive elevation gain. It includes a Tibetan bridge, a Nepalese bridge and a zip line approximately 35 metres long. The via ferrata has a medium difficulty rating of K3. When climbing in El Chorro, climbers mainly encounter technical walls with little overhang; individual sections can reach inclines of up to 90°.
