Casabermeja: Culture, Ceramics and Hiking Trails

Casabermeja’s cultural character is particularly evident at the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Socorro: it is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and is considered the town’s most important urban landmark.

Culture and Craftsmanship

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Socorro was built in the first half of the 16th century and expanded in the 18th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves and a transept vaulted by a dome.

Ceramics continue to be produced by hand in Casabermeja. The Museo Taller de Cerámica was established in 2007 and presents a permanent exhibition as well as several temporary exhibitions. In March 2026, a programme combined a visit to the museum with the opportunity to make your own ceramic piece at the market.

The Enclave Arqueológico de Peñas de Cabrera comprises prehistoric rock paintings in numerous rock shelters on the Cerro de Cabrera. It is located in an exceptionally well-preserved landscape with predominantly native flora and fauna. Visits to the Peñas de Cabrera are organised for groups of 10 to 50 people by prior arrangement and must be requested at least one week before the desired date.

Landscape

A prominent natural monument is the Olivo Milenario, a monumental olive tree. The University of Córdoba recognised it as such on 5 April 2013. The tree grows from three trunks, each of which has a circumference of more than 7 metres. Its age of over 1,000 years was confirmed in Concepción Muñoz’s dissertation at the University of Córdoba.

The Parque Natural de los Montes de Málaga extends across the municipal areas of Málaga and Casabermeja and covers 4,900 hectares. The Ruta Madroñal y Cerro Mallén also passes through Bocanegra, a wooded area with native Mediterranean forest species.

Hiking Trails and Views

Casabermeja has six designated hiking trails: Ruta de las Fuentes, Ruta de los Tajos, Ruta Campo de Cámara, Ruta Las Peñas de Cabrera, Ruta Madroñal y Cerro Mallén and Ruta Torre Zambra.

The Ruta Madroñal y Cerro Mallén reaches Cerro Mallén, which, at 915 metres above sea level, is the highest point in the municipality of Casabermeja. The route offers 360-degree views across large parts of Casabermeja and Málaga province. The designated trail lengths and walking times provide a straightforward basis for comparing routes when planning your day.

Torre Zambra is a Muslim defensive tower on the summit of a strategically located hill. In clear weather, panoramic views of Málaga, the Montes de Málaga, parts of Granada, the Torcal and North Africa are possible from there. The Ruta Torre Zambra also has a designated recreational area with a children’s park, a covered barbecue area with 10 grills, drinking water, tables and benches, toilets, and a hostel with two large halls. One of the halls has a fireplace and a large terrace.

In addition to the El Calvario chapel, the Ruta de los Tajos includes an architecturally distinguished viewpoint with 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains. The Ruta Las Peñas de Cabrera is an easy hike covering 4.5 kilometres each way, with a walking time of 1 hour and 20 minutes each way, and leads through Mediterranean forest.

The Ruta de las Fuentes leads to the Las Parras Nuevas spring. The Roman waterworks Castelum Aquae and the Cementerio de San Sebastián are also located there. The cemetery was built in the 18th century, has held Bien de Interés Cultural status since 2006 and has been designated a Monumento Nacional since 1980.

Regional Cuisine and Festivals

The Fiesta de la Cabra Malagueña combines a livestock show and shepherding activities with a cheese market, local products and handicrafts, tastings, monument visits, concerts, Verdiales and a gastronomy route featuring goat and cheese products.

Local cuisine includes Chivo Lechal Malagueño as well as other meat and dairy products from the Cabra Española de Raza Malagueña goat breed.
