The Iglesia de San José de Purchil has no main altarpiece because a stone baldachin was installed there in the 18th century. Its furnishings include four Baroque and two Neo-Gothic altarpieces.

Culture and Festivals

The same church houses a Virgen de Belén with the Christ Child, a work by the Baroque sculptor Pedro de Mena. The Iglesia de San José de Purchil already existed in 1568.

On Viernes de los Dolores, religious events and a procession of the Virgen de los Dolores and Jesús Nazareno take place in Purchil. In Purchil, the Fiestas de la Merendica are celebrated on Jueves Lardero as a traditional festival and as a gathering in the countryside before Lent.

The church furnishings, local history and festival traditions provide different cultural accents: the building preserves named artworks and architectural features, while the two dates represent religious and rural forms of communal celebration, respectively.

Those who wish to give different weight to cultural events and architectural evidence can incorporate these two forms separately into their own travel plans.

Local History

The historic place name “Borch-Hilall”, which corresponds to Purchil, means “tower of the thorn” or “tower of the needle”.

Route and Rural Heritage

The Ruta de las Alquerías begins at the Plaza Mayor de Purchil. This starting point therefore has a different thematic context from the Secadero de Tabaco en Purchil: here, it is a route, while there it is a preserved building reflecting the area’s agricultural heritage.

The Secadero de Tabaco en Purchil is the largest tobacco drying barn built in the Vega de Granada. Its particularly robust construction using ladrillo gafa and concrete beams is considered a possible reason why it has survived to this day.

The route and the rural architectural heritage site have different focuses if you wish to structure your days around activity, local history and agricultural themes.
