Culture and History
The Iglesia de la Encarnación was established as a parish in 1501 and built on the site of Monachil’s former main mosque. Its main altarpiece dates from the 16th century and is attributed to the workshop of Pedro Machuca.
The Cerro de la Encina archaeological site was inhabited between 2000 and 900 BC during the Bronze Age. The oldest part of the Casa Señorial Molino de los Aragones dates from 1450; the building is regarded as the oldest and best-preserved historic residence in Monachil today.
A suggested walk along the southern slope of Monachil’s historic centre passes the façades of historic cave houses and offers views over the valley.

Olla de San Antón is a traditional Monachil dish that is offered free of charge by the municipality on 17 January; it is served throughout the month in most restaurants in the municipality.
At Jamones Mariscal, visitors can observe the artisanal process of salting and curing Monachil’s Serrano ham. Saborea Monachil is a multi-day tapas route held in spring that has existed since 2016.
The culinary recommendations differ in timing, duration and format. A date in January, a multi-day spring event and observing an artisanal production process represent different ways of getting to know local specialities in Monachil.
