Ferreirola – Cultural Heritage, Festivals and Hiking Trails

Ferreirola is one of the six settlement units of the historic site of Alpujarra Media Granadina and La Tahá, which is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest. The traditional villagescape includes a public washhouse, an almost monumental fountain, tinaos and small squares. The Era del Trance de Ferreirola is an agricultural threshing floor situated opposite a gorge. The Fuente Gaseosa in Ferreirola is a spring with abundant gas dissolved in the water, originating from iron-carbonate-rich rocks; local residents traditionally drink its water with their meals.

Culture

Ferreirola preserves the remains of an old mill and also has a parish church dedicated to Santa Cruz. Two depictions of the Blessed Souls are venerated in a chapel. A Casa-Escuela for foreigners teaches Spanish, the history and customs of the Andalusian people, and especially Alpujarran folklore and traditional gastronomy.

Different cultural layers therefore exist side by side in the village: the protected historic setting, traces of earlier work, religious sites, and an offering that combines language, history, customs, folklore and gastronomy. The washhouse, fountain, tinaos and small squares are as much part of the villagescape as the threshing floor opposite the gorge. The spring adds a traditional regional drinking custom to these local features.

Festivals

During its festivals, Ferreirola continues to celebrate the festival or custom known as “Entierro de la Zorra”. The Santa Cruz festivities in Ferreirola take place on the third weekend of August. The travelling Al-Taha Festival was intended to include several villages in the municipality, including Ferreirola, as venues from 23 to 27 July.

The dates and customs mentioned represent different temporal and thematic aspects of the festival calendar. The third weekend of August indicates the period of the Santa Cruz festivities, while Al-Taha was intended to include several villages in the municipality as a travelling festival. The “Entierro de la Zorra” custom forms part of Ferreirola’s traditional festival heritage independently of these details.

Hiking

The medieval hiking trail passes through Ferreirola, and the long-distance GR-240 trail also runs through the village. Route 2 of the “7 pueblos, 7 rutas” programme passes through Pitres, Mecina, Mecinilla, Fondales, Ferreirola and Atalbéitar before returning to Pitres. Route 6 of this programme leads from Mecina via the escarihuela de Fondales, Cerro Corona and the escarihuela de Panjuila to Ferreirola. The starting point, circular route, course and stated length offer different points of comparison for planning a personal day trip. The hiking trail from Pitres to Ferreirola is 3 kilometres long; its final section follows the long-distance GR-142 trail.
