Discover Villalón: Culture, Trails and Festivals

Villalón was the first settlement nucleus to emerge in the former landscape known as “Desierto de La Parrilla” before the Carolingian colonization.

Culture

The urban ensembles of Villalón, including their squares, follow the design by D. Simón Desnaux. They preserve houses and the style of the colonial New Settlements of Andalusia. The squares of Villalón and Los Silillos are distinguished by an angled layout.

On the Plaza Real, the square layout is combined with orange trees; the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles is located there. The church building was constructed in 1968.

Another building is the Fuente de Villalón: it consists of a masonry shelter topped by a four-sided roof, a rectangular basin, and a large and a smaller livestock trough attached to it. The restored historic spring is associated with Carlos III and is still in use.

The Fuente de Villalón is located about 200 metres from the town centre, beside the road connecting Villalón with Ochavillo del Río. The spring is also included in the Ruta de las Fuentes Históricas developed by the municipality.

Cortijo San José lies between the districts of Villalón and La Herrería. Despite its ruined condition, it retains its original layout as a traditional olive mill building arranged around an inner courtyard.

Nature and Trails

The Ruta del Molino de San Roque is a linear route 8.64 km long and begins in a town centre.

Its route uses municipal paths connecting farms with the settlements of Villalón and La Herrería. Along the way, the route passes through a mosaic-like agricultural landscape in which the crops of the Campiña extend towards the fertile floodplains of the Guadalquivir.

The route can be classified by length, starting point, path connection and landscape; the local attractions and festivals, on the other hand, follow their own formats and schedules. For planning purposes, these different focuses can be considered separately, without mixing the route details with the cultural or event-related topics.

Festivals

The Feria de Villalón is the most important local festival. It takes place on the weekend closest to 2 August. A local Rociero choir takes part in the celebrations, and its name honours the patron saint.

At night, the festival’s Velailla in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles is celebrated on the Plaza de Carlos III with dancing and an orchestra.

A Candelaria festival in Villalón is also described with a set programme: from 4 p.m., traditional games for children and a refreshment stand were planned on the football pitch esplanade; after nightfall, a fire was to be lit.

Parque del Emigrante is designed for the entertainment of young children.
