Discover Puente Genil: Culture, Nature and Holiday Apartments

The Villa Romana de Fuente Álamo in Puente Genil is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of an archaeological zone. It was built in the 3rd century AD. The Municipal Historical Museum displays capitals, ceramics, bronzes, glass, Latin inscriptions and sculptures from the High Imperial period.

Culture

Puente Genil's vibrant culture includes the Festival de Cante Grande Fosforito. Since its first edition in 1966, it has taken place every year and includes singing, guitar and dance. The Sala Fosforito displays festival posters as well as the complete discography of the master Fosforito.

Another key feature is Holy Week in Puente Genil, locally also known as “La Mananta”. Its customs have been preserved in Puente Genil and passed down from generation to generation. The Holy Week Museum presents a permanent exhibition with memorabilia, handicrafts, paintings and other elements of Holy Week in Puente Genil. Semana Santa Chiquita is a child-friendly presentation of this Holy Week; it takes place between the last week of April and the first week of May and reaches its peak on 3 May.

Nature

Laguna de Tíscar has been protected as a nature reserve since 1984 and is part of the wetlands of southern Córdoba. The lagoon covers 13 hectares and contains saltwater or brackish water. On its shore, there is a public observation centre that can be visited year-round for undisturbed birdwatching.

The Embalse de Cordobilla is also a protected wetland with Paraje Natural status. It receives water from the Genil, Anzur and Lucena rivers. In the shallow waters of the Paraje Natural de Cordobilla, waders, herons and other waterfowl can be observed.

Near Los Castellares are the remains of an Iberian settlement around 2,500 years old. There, a rock cut follows the course of the river and forms the shape of a meander. It consists of calcarenite and contains many fossils of shells that lived in the sea around 15 to 20 million years ago.

Getting There

The archaeological site of Villa Romana de Fuente Álamo cannot be reached by public transport. A private vehicle is recommended; for groups, a bus or taxi is advised.
