Discover Cádiz: Gadir, Carnival and City Beaches

Cádiz brings together Gadir, the Carnaval de Cádiz, museums and city beaches. The Gadir archaeological site is one of the oldest Phoenician settlements in the West and preserves eight houses distributed across two terraces, arranged around two paved streets.

Culture

The Carnaval de Cádiz is recognised as a Festival of International Tourist Interest and as a Bien de Interés Cultural. During the Carnaval de Cádiz, dozens of groups perform their repertoires in the city's streets for locals and visitors over the course of a week. The Casa del Carnaval de Cádiz is an exhibition and cultural centre dedicated to the Carnaval de Cádiz, presenting costumes, songs and audiovisual material.

Cádiz Cathedral was completed over 116 years and combines Baroque and Neoclassical stylistic features. Since 2003, the Torre de Poniente of Cádiz Cathedral has provided access to the bell tower via a ramp, along with views over the city.

The Museo de Cádiz has an archaeological section with Phoenician and Roman holdings, including Phoenician sarcophagi from the 5th century BC. The Fine Arts section of the Museo de Cádiz houses paintings from the 16th to the 20th century, including works by Zurbarán, Murillo and Rubens. Its ethnographic section displays the traditional puppets of Tía Norica.

History

A Roman salt factory was discovered in 1995 on the site of the former Teatro de Andalucía; it has been preserved in its entirety in parts of the basement of the new building. For planning your own day, the historical, artistic and festive highlights can be explored separately or combined.

Coast and Water

Playa Victoria is a city beach with a wide seafront promenade and restaurants offering local cuisine. On the promenade of Playa Santa María del Mar there is a large semicircular viewing platform overlooking the historic old town of Cádiz.
