Vera Playa – Beaches, Lagoons and Water Sports

Vera Playa combines extensive beach areas, unique natural areas and a varied programme by the sea. El Playazo is more than 2 kilometres long and approximately 120 metres wide. Playa Naturista is a natural continuation of El Playazo and is considered Europe’s first naturist enclave.

Coast and Beach

El Playazo holds the Blue Flag, SICTED and Ecoplayas environmental and quality awards. The Paseo Marítimo runs for 1,775 metres along Las Marinas-Bolaga beach. This is an open, spacious urban beach more than 1,350 metres long and with an average width of 200 metres.

Cala Marqués forms the northernmost part of El Playazo and lies in a small cove with pine trees in the background. Playa de Cala Marqués holds the SICTED and Ecoplayas environmental and quality seals. Different beach dimensions and landscape forms give you several specific options for planning your day.

Nature

Laguna de Puerto Rey is a 2.7-hectare Site of Community Importance. At the same time, it is an ecologically valuable wetland habitat at the mouth of the Antas River. Vera’s ecotourism offering suggests exploring the beaches, which are more than 5 km long, and Laguna de Puerto Rey on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

Laguna de Vera is an ecologically valuable habitat for waterbirds and serves, among other things, as a breeding and rearing area for the white-headed duck and marbled duck. It also lies along waterbird migration routes.

Culture and History

Las Marinas-Bolaga is traditionally also known as Villajarapa. The name is connected with traditional camping stays involving jarapas, rugs and tapestries made from twisted strips of fabric, which were common until the 1970s.

Opposite Plaza de la Pérgola stands a chimney from the former San Jacinto smelting works. Numerous cultural and sporting activities take place along the Paseo Marítimo, including concerts, children’s games, theatre and workshops.

Activities by the Sea

“Tus Playas de Invierno” includes yoga by the sea, outdoor workshops and group games. From November to May, the programme offers free beach activities on Saturdays and Sundays without prior registration. “Atardeceres con Encanto” is free and does not require a reservation.

El Playazo offers water sports equipment rental, a sports area and an area for practising surfing. A sailing school has been operating at El Playazo de Vera for more than 10 years and offers weekly courses in windsurfing, kitesurfing, catamaran sailing and Optimist sailing.

Practical Information

Public transport connects Vera’s coast with the town centre all year round; services run more frequently in summer. Vera’s beaches have lifeguard and water rescue services, medical care, police patrols, safety information, beach cleaning and separate waste bins.

Accessible beach facilities include toilets, showers, foot-washing stations, adapted sanitary facilities, amphibious chairs, beach access mats and children’s areas. AquaVera is located at Avenida Ciudad de Valencia 2B, 04621 Vera-Playa, Almería, Andalusia, Spain.

A water ride at AquaVera runs for 380 metres through bends and descents, overcoming a height difference of 12.42 metres. AquaVera has a water play area for small children with slides, water fountains and ramps.
