Culture

The Zagorje Mining Museum first opened its doors on 17 November 1995 to commemorate 240 years of mining in the Zagorje Valley. Its collection on mining history includes photographs, tools, rocks, and equipment used by miners. The museum is designed as an interactive museum and can be explored independently using a smartphone.

The Ladko Korošec Memorial Room is a multimedia space. His image and distinctive voice are at the center. The room is located in the Weinberger House, where Korošec played his recordings to friends for the first time upon his return to Zagorje. The f 2.8 Photo Gallery provides another cultural highlight: it was established in August 2020 next to the former miners’ bathhouse “Vašhava” in Zagorje ob Savi. The exhibition area focuses on selected photographers from Zasavje as well as outstanding artists from throughout Slovenia.

In the town center, Dr. Janez Drnovšek Park is located next to the regional road through Zagorje. It includes a bronze bust of Dr. Janez Drnovšek, a sign marking the 15th meridian, and the sculpture “Turn of the Century” (“Prelom stoletja”). Another memorial site is the fountain with a bronze fibula. It displays a replica of a Hallstatt-era belt buckle found in Zagorje at the end of the 19th century.

Trails and Landscape

Several routes explore different sides of the surrounding area. Iskranjca is a demanding trail approximately 5.4 kilometers long, running from Zagorje railway station to the pond in Zagorje. The Rudarska pot Srečno is suitable for walking, recreation and relaxation, as well as for visiting natural and cultural attractions. The focus is on the technical mining heritage. Evropark is a sports and recreational park created by restoring the former Ruardi area for slag and mining waste. In addition to two interconnected flow-through basins, it has walking paths and a cycling path. For mountain biking, Mountainbike park Cilenca offers four trails: Forest Bump (Flow), Jumanji, Super Mario, and French Connection.

In Zagorje ob Savi, flowering Japanese cherry trees grow in two rows: one is located next to the medical center, and the other between the bypass and Medija. As an urban adventure in its own right, “Totalna panika” leads from point to point through Zagorje ob Savi and includes tasks.

Events

The Slovenian Flute Festival was held in Zagorje ob Savi for the first time in 1996 and takes place every two years. The program includes concerts, master classes, public lessons, workshops, panel discussions, project presentations, and exhibitions of flutes, sheet music, and musical accessories. Also held every two years is Revija Zagorje ob Savi, a competition for children’s and youth choirs that has been held since 1968.
