Šentjur combines a historic town centre with railway history, exhibitions, cycling routes and nearby attractions. Ipavec House has stood in Zgornji trg since 1760; it is the birthplace of the Ipavec dynasty and houses a permanent exhibition about the Ipavec family. Also located in Zgornji trg is the Šentjur Tourist Information Centre, or TIC Šentjur, opposite the parish church of Saint George, together with the Zakladi Rifnika museum collection.

Culture

Zgornji trg is Šentjur’s old market square and was first mentioned in 1340 as a settlement around the Church of Saint George. The first mention of the town of Šentjur is linked to this church in a document dating from 1340. Today’s Church of Saint George was built between 1708 and 1721 on the site of an early Gothic church. Its Baroque structure comprises a nave, side chapels and an attached bell tower. Zgornji trg also includes a chestnut park with a playground equipped with sensory play elements.

Galerija Zgornji trg Šentjur is located in the former basement rooms of the residents of Ipavčeva 17 in Zgornji trg. Five to six exhibitions by local and visiting artists are held there every year. The objects on display include a plague monument from Marija Dobje bearing the year 1641. Another permanent exhibition in Šentjur focuses on the work of renowned performers of swing, gospel and spiritual music. The performers featured in the exhibition began their successful musical careers in Šentjur in 1968.

Railway and regional history

The Museum of the Southern Railway Šentjur is located at the town’s railway station. It presents a reconstruction of the historic station from the period when the Graz–Celje railway line was built. Below the museum is the Winegrowers Learning Basement, where visitors can taste wines from local winegrowers. The Šentjur Tour destination is located on the Southern Railway; rail services are operated by Slovenske železnice, the Slovenian Railways.

Cycling routes and nature

“The Song of the Southern Railway” is a 34-kilometre circular cycling route that starts in Šentjur. The equally 34-kilometre circular cycling route “The Path of Good Energy” can be started at Zgornji trg in Šentjur, at Šentjur or Ponikva railway station, or in the car park by the bus stop in Dramlje. Lake Slivnica, located near Šentjur, is suitable for water sports. Its surroundings are ideal for walking, cycling and observing rare animals and plants. The Archaeological Park of Rifnik is also located near Šentjur. It is open year-round and preserves the foundations of two Early Christian churches and seven houses, as well as fortification walls with watchtowers and a well.
