Holiday apartment in Gradac: Castle, park and Lahinja

Gradac Castle is protected as a cultural monument of national importance. Gradac lies on both banks of the Lahinja at a large bend in the river. Its location on the river and the protected building give the town a clear geographical and cultural setting.

Culture

Gradac Castle is one of the best-preserved castles in Bela krajina. Its present appearance dates from the first half of the 19th century. Gradac is therefore home to a building whose current form can be assigned to a clearly identified period, while its state of preservation is particularly notable within Bela krajina.

Landscape

A park was created behind Gradac Castle and has been preserved in its basic layout to this day. The park of Gradac Castle is considered the only castle garden in Bela krajina. The park contains a grave with a stone sarcophagus. The park, castle and grave are therefore situated in a directly interconnected area, without the individual elements losing their own significance.

The large bend of the Lahinja shapes the location of Gradac: the town extends along both banks of the river. A medieval castle stands on a meander of the Lahinja.

Getting around

The Kučar cycling route leads towards Gradac. From Novo Mesto, the Kučar cycling route can be reached by car or train.

History

The Red Cross of Slovenia was founded at the Sokolski dom in Gradac on 18 June 1944. Gradac also has a memorial room dedicated to the founding of the Red Cross of Slovenia. The memorial room thus refers to precisely the founding event associated with the Sokolski dom.

Another historical marker was unveiled in Gradac on 29 April 1951: the monument bears the names of 41 fallen fighters and victims of fascist violence from Gradac, Klošter and Vranoviči. The local history therefore encompasses both the place of foundation and its associated memorial room, as well as a monument unveiled later that names individual victims and fighters.
