Izola combines narrow alleys, Mediterranean architecture, maritime history and a coastline with eight beaches. In addition, there are paths for walks and cycling tours, a half-day hike into the surrounding area, as well as special places for culture and wine. This means the city reveals different facets within a compact area.

Culture and history

At Izolana, you can see models of traditional boats, a restored Pasara boat, a true-to-scale model of Izola and a projection about the city's history. A one-hour guided tour there focuses on Izola's fishing, maritime and shipbuilding traditions. The Old Town also offers an insight into the history of the town: it is characterised by narrow alleys and Mediterranean architecture. A guided tour through the Old Town also conveys the city's Venetian heritage and fishing traditions.

Coast and water

Izola has eight beaches stretching over five kilometres. Visitors can explore the Izola coastline by SUP and reach all eight beaches. The combination of several beach sections and access from the water is therefore one of the city's clearly defined coastal features.

Paths and landscape

The former coastal road between Izola and Koper has now been developed as a cycling and walking path. The Parenzana also runs through Izola. It was formerly a narrow-gauge railway between Trieste and Poreč and is now the D6 or D8 Health and Friendship Route. The section running through Izola has a medium difficulty level of 3/5. Its predominantly wooded paths and gravel roads make it suitable for mountain biking.

A half-day hike from Izola into the surrounding area offers views across the heart of Istria to the sea, as well as of the Alps and the Dolomites. Thus, in addition to the paths along the coast, the landscapes in the wider area surrounding the city are also a focus.

Local character

Every year, Refuscus Mundi – World of Refusco takes place in Izola at Manzioli Square and Manzioli Palace. The event is dedicated to wines made from the Refusco grape variety. The seasonal market “Ruba sz moje njive” gives local farmers in Izola the opportunity to sell their produce.

Practical information

The Izola Tourist Information Centre provides visitors exploring the city independently with a city map and points out particularly noteworthy places. This provides a specific point of contact for independent exploration, with local maps and information about selected destinations.
