Dravograd is a hub where the Drava Cycling Route and Štrekna meet. Štrekna is a 35-kilometre cycling path through the Mislinja Valley and the Huda Luknja Gorge, fully paved and separated from other traffic.

Cycling and routes

The Drava Cycling Route runs from the Vič border crossing through the centre of Dravograd, across the bridge to Bukovje and onwards towards Trbonje. Cyclists can use intermodal transport options in Dravograd, including bus and train connections. Shorter routes also lead through the surrounding area: the Dravograd–Grad forest educational trail is a circular route from the town through the forest and past the old castle. It is described as easy and suitable for a wide range of hikers.

The Pot za srce recreational trail leads uphill from the Dravograd Health Centre to the old castle, then descends to the Drava and Lake Dravograd before returning to the health centre along the banks of the Drava. On the left bank, the Ribniška pot trail passes the Dom koroških ribičev v Dravogradu, the Koroška Fishermen’s Centre at Dravograd. The ruins of Grad Dravograd are an immovable local cultural monument. They can be reached from the centre of Dravograd via a footpath and by car along a road.

Nature

Lake Dravograd is a wetland ecosystem with islands and reed beds. More than 150 species of waterfowl find refuge and nesting grounds there. The Drava near Dravograd is part of a Natura 2000 site.

The Bobrčkova učna pot educational trail runs around Lake Dravograd and includes seven stations. Along the trail, the beaver introduces visitors to the plants and animals that live in and around Lake Dravograd. The themed trails at Lake Dravograd also offer opportunities for birdwatching. At the end of the Bobrčkova učna pot educational trail, visitors are invited to the Karawanks Geopark information centre in Bukovje Manor. The exhibitions “Zakladi nemirne reke” and “Dravit – svetovni popotnik iz Dravograda” can be viewed there.

Next to Lake Dravograd, the Fishing Hall houses a natural history collection presenting the habitats of the Drava, Meža and Mislinja rivers.

Culture and history

Bukovje Manor in Dravograd is a Baroque manor house. The Dravograd Museum presents a permanent exhibition at the manor about the Slovenian War of Independence in Koroška in 1991. The rich history of the Kometer noble family is also presented there. Bukovje Manor hosts a variety of social events; its modern offering is connected with the manor’s natural setting and cultural heritage.

The Dravograd Museum conveys the history of the developing town and its surroundings from the past through modern history. Dravograd is also home to the important Romanesque Church of St. Vitus. The Gestapo Prisons collection is housed in five former prison cells in the basement of the Dravograd municipal building. The Gestapo Prisons exhibition can only be visited by prior appointment; individual visits are not possible.
