Vrádište: Morava Landscape, Churches and Wine Routes

Vrádište is located in western Slovakia, in the Slovak part of the Dolnomoravský úval, 4 km southeast of Skalica.

Local Landscape and Nature

Most of Vrádište’s cadastral area has a flat relief shaped by terraces of the Morava River. A remnant of the original floodplain forest has been preserved on an island in the Morava River.

Protected plant species have been recorded in the Vrádište area, including kosatec dvojfarebný, hmyzovník čmeľovitý, vstavač vojenský and hlaváčik jarný. Protected animal species have also been recorded there, including jašterica obyčajná, vidlochvost feniklový and sova obyčajná.

Local Culture and History

The Church of St. Anne was built in 1754; it was renovated and remodelled around 1900.

The Nováková family from Vrádište built the Chapel of the Holy Cross on the road to Skalica, at the boundary of the cadastral areas. The chapel is mentioned in a canonical visitation from 1788.

There used to be a water reservoir next to the chapel, from which ice was taken during the winter months for Skalica’s icehouse.

The Lurdská jaskyňa next to the church was built in 2008. The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1899 and originally stood on the opposite side of the road. Thus, buildings from different periods stand side by side in Vrádište, while the chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary has also retained a record of its original location.

Paths and Wine

Recreational cycle route 5202 connects Kátov, Vrádište, Prietržka and Skalica over a total length of 8.5 km. The Skalická wine route runs through the vineyards of Prietržka and Vrádište to a rest area; the route does not descend into the built-up part of Vrádište.

The vineyards of Vrádište lie along the Skalická wine route and are associated in the route description with the brand of the red wine Skalický rubín. Thus, the paths around the village bring together different landscape and cultural references: the Morava terrace landscape, the vineyards and the connections to the surrounding villages.
