Skalica: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

One of the distinctive buildings in Skalica is the Rotunda of St. George. The Romanesque building, probably dating from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, was later remodelled in the Gothic and Baroque styles. Its upper part was connected to the fortifications and served a defensive function, while the lower part served as a chapel.

Culture

The Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel was remodelled in the Late Gothic period from a single-nave church into a three-nave basilica. The Franciscan Church of the Seven Sorrows of Mary is a Gothic building dating from the mid-15th century. The presbytery retains a richly decorated Gothic net vault, while the sacristy has groin vaults; the interior furnishings and furniture are designed in the Late Baroque style.

The Franciscan monastery complex comprises the church building, the Paradise Courtyard and a large Franciscan garden. The permanent exhibition of the Záhorské Museum is located in the original rooms on the upper floor. From 1905 onwards, Dušan Jurkovič designed these rooms as an illusion of a farmhouse for a museum.

The Ľadovňa is a rare technical monument and illustrates the early modern urban economy of Skalica. The Pilárik brothers’ mill has been restored and is open to the public.

During a guided tour of Skalica, visitors normally see around three monuments of their choice; the tour usually lasts one hour. It can be conducted in Slovak, English or German.

Skalický rubín is a protected red wine made exclusively from the grape varieties Frankovka modrá, Svätovavrinecké and Modrý Portugal. Frankovka modrá must account for at least 70 percent. The wine must be made from grapes from registered vineyards in the cadastral territory of Skalica and in Mokrý Háj, Radošovce, Popudinské Močidlany, Prietržka and Vrádište. These vineyards lie at the foot of Vintoperk and cover approximately 50 square kilometres.

Nature

The Zlatnícka dolina recreation and tourism area is located near Skalica at the foot of the White Carpathians. It offers hiking, summer and winter sports, several cycling routes and, during the summer months, a publicly accessible natural swimming pool.

The Veterník Nature Reserve lies in the cadastral territory of Skalica. The area is intended to protect habitats of European importance, including xerothermic scrub, drought-loving grassland and shrub communities, lowland and submontane hay meadows, and alluvial forests. The stag beetle, the plum lappet moth and the large-flowered pasqueflower are also to be protected there.

Water

The Skalica port on the Baťa Canal allows guests to board and disembark on the Slovak side.
