Illau combines impressive historical traces with marked trails through the landscape and regularly held events. The first reliable mention of Ilavský hrad dates from 1446. Another defining building is the Ilavská zvonica, which was extensively remodeled in the Baroque style in 1758. At that time, it received a second floor and a curved Baroque roof.

History and City Museum

The historical exhibition on the ground floor of the Ilava City Museum is currently open to the public. Its content extends far beyond individual buildings: it covers the origins and history of the city as well as the history of the castle, from its early beginnings through the aristocratic and monastic complex to the prison. It also offers insights into life in the city, guilds and crafts, the Ilava brewery, the Jewish religious community, Gábor Baross and the château in Klobušice. Infocentrum Ilava serves as the entrance to the City Museum and sells, among other things, tourist maps, books and postcards.

Sacred Buildings and Historic Sites

The Roman Catholic Church of All Saints in Ilava was built between 1701 and 1718; its towers were completed in 1722. The building is a single-nave Baroque hall church with a crypt and two corner towers. The crypt extends beneath the entire church. Several members of the Trinitarian Order, as well as some of the church’s founders and members of the local nobility, are buried there. At present, the church is accessible only through a single main entrance via a narrow path between the prison walls.

The development of the monastery is also part of the city’s history: in 1856, it was converted, with comparatively minor modifications, into a nationwide prison for inmates serving sentences of more than ten years. Ilava is also home to one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in the central Považie region. In Klobušice lies the crypt of Gábor Baross, which serves as the burial place of a former Minister of Transport and Trade under the Austro-Hungarian government. The crypt was completed in 1895; until then, Gábor Baross had been buried in the crypt of the church in Ilava.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

A marked hiking trail leads from Ilava railway station via Sokol and the Háj settlement to Vápeč (956 m). The entire route is expected to take approximately four and a half hours; the elevation gain is 706 meters. The trail from Ilava via Sokol and Vápeč alternates between forest and mountain meadows and offers continuous views. A different type of landscape can be found in the Iliavčanská dolina valley: the weekend cottage area there is a recreational area on the outskirts of Ilava.

Cycling Route and Running Event

For cyclists, a newly opened 11.6-kilometer section of the Vážska cyklomagistrála connects Nemšová, Dubnica nad Váhom and Košeca. Those using the route from Ilava can leave their car in a free overflow car park at the railway station and access the cycling route directly from there. For cyclists starting in Ilava, the Vážska cyklomagistrála also provides a safe connection to surrounding towns and an opportunity to explore the region.

Another sporting event is the Ilavský beh. The 13-kilometer road race runs through the Porubská and Iliavská valleys into the Strážovské vrchy and has an elevation gain of 176 meters. The organization of the Ilavský beh began in 1996.

Fair and Regional Tradition

The regularly held Bartolomejský jarmok in Ilava takes place at the end of August on the occasion of the Feast of Saint Bartholomew. It combines craft stalls, traditional fair specialties, regional products and a cultural program.
