Holiday apartment in Svidník: Discover culture, history and landscapes

Svidník brings together Rusyn-Ukrainian culture, wartime history and landscapes in tangible collections, monuments and viewpoints. The Svidník open-air museum offers a vivid insight into the region’s architectural heritage. Covering an area of approximately 11 hectares, it comprises around 50 examples of folk architecture from various Rusyn and Ukrainian locations in eastern Slovakia.

Culture and history

The city’s historical memory includes the Monument to the Soviet Army with its military cemetery. It is a monument site forming part of the national cultural monument “Dukelské bojisko”, which was entered in the central register of the monument fund on 27 February 1961. A regular fixture in the annual calendar is the Slávnosti rusínsko-ukrajinskej kultúry: the cultural festival takes place in Svidník every year in mid-June and has been held there since 1956.

The Dezider Milly Gallery in Svidník presents the development of the folk and professional visual arts of Ukrainians in Slovakia from the 16th century to the present day. A rare collection of icons is the outstanding feature of its exhibition and is among the oldest and most valuable collection items of the SNM – Museum of Ukrainian Culture in Svidník. The cultural and historical exhibition of the SNM – MUK also provides an overview of the history of settlement, the economy and state administration, as well as the social, national and cultural development of the ethnic group in question from the earliest times to the present day.

The collections focus on different aspects: the gallery traces the development of visual art over several centuries, while the cultural and historical exhibition explores social and governmental contexts from the earliest times to the present day. The collection of icons forms a distinct focus within the gallery. Together with the open-air museum and the Park bojovej techniky, the thematic range thus extends from folk architecture and art to the history of settlement, the economy and administration, as well as military exhibits.

Another open-air collection is displayed at the Park bojovej techniky in Svidník. It contains 17 museum exhibits of Soviet, German and Czechoslovak origin, including heavy armoured equipment as well as artillery and air-combat technology from the wartime and post-war periods.

Views and landscapes

The Vyhliadková veža observation tower with Útulňa near Svidník offers a different perspective on the town. From a height of almost 13 metres, it provides panoramic views over Svidník, from the Monument to the Soviet Army to the Osy forest complex. The Vyhliadková veža is easily accessible year-round for families with children, older people, cyclists, cross-country skiers and hikers.

The landscape in the surrounding area can also be explored through several named mountains. The mountains Kolašovka, Čierna Hora and Rohula are located in the immediate vicinity of Svidník. Kozí Brad mountain lies in the surroundings of Svidník. Further afield in the region is the ruin “Zřícenina Zborov”.

Practical information

The Svidník Tourist Information Centre provides visitors with SAD bus departure and arrival times. The Dezider Milly Gallery is located 200 metres from the bus station in Svidník. This makes it possible to plan a visit to the gallery around the bus timetable, while the other cultural sites and viewpoints offer different points of interest within the town and landscape.
