Holiday apartment in Giraltovce – nature, culture and trails along the Topľa and Radomka

Giraltovce lies at the confluence of the Topľa and Radomka rivers. The landscape has diverse features: the western part of the municipality is flat, while the eastern part is gently undulating to more varied in relief. The Radomka Nature Reserve is located nearby. It protects natural meadow and fen communities in floodplain meadows along the Radomka stream.

Nature and trails

Several trails open up the landscape around Giraltovce, with varied routes and trail conditions. The Rybník circular trail runs via Ulica kpt. Nálepku and a field path along the Radomka and a stream. It is 4 km long and takes approximately 3 hours. Herons, gulls, fish and amphibians can be observed along the circular trail; water and marsh plants also grow there.

The walking trail along the Topľa leads from the former tannery via the dam and the riverside path to the edge of Giraltovce. It is 3 km long and takes approximately 2 hours. Along the trail there is riverside vegetation, wild ducks, fish and fishing spots. Another route is the CHPR Radomka circular trail: it crosses a stream and leads across wet meadows and pastures. It is 6 km long and takes approximately 4 hours. The trails described therefore also differ in their duration: the Rybník circular trail is shorter than the CHPR Radomka loop, while the walking trail along the Topľa lies between the two. The routes range from field paths to dams and riverside paths, as well as stream crossings, meadows and pastures.

Culture and history

At Mieru Park, a public event space blends with local tradition. Its amphitheatre provides space for large music events and festivals. In 2026, the Topľa Valley Folklore Festival was held for the 33rd time at Mieru Park in Giraltovce.

A prominent testament to the town's history is the Evangelical church. It was built between 1650 and 1654, including a tower. The Renaissance tower of the church was restored in 1810. The Evangelical church had already been extensively rebuilt, extended and enlarged in 1798.

The Giraltovce Jewish cemetery is also one of the town's historic sites. It was established in 1862 on a hill within the town. The cemetery contains approximately 100 gravestones, most of which are made of sandstone and granite. In 2008, a Holocaust memorial was erected there listing the Jewish families who lived in Giraltovce until 1942.

Giraltovce is also associated with Hlovíkova litera, a literary competition named after the writer and Evangelical pastor Adam Hlovík, who worked in Giraltovce for many years.

Fishing and active leisure

Fishing permits can be purchased every Friday during office hours, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the office of MO SRZ Giraltovce. For active leisure, tennis courts and a beach volleyball court can also be rented in Giraltovce.
