Humenné District: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Vihorlat Observatory in Humenné is a regional astronomical institution with a building open to visitors in the city centre. The visitor programme includes evening observations with a 30 cm Ritchey–Chrétien telescope in a 4 m high dome.

Culture and History

The Roman Catholic Church of All Saints in Humenné is a national cultural monument and is considered the easternmost Gothic building in Europe outside the Brick Gothic style. It has stained-glass windows by the artist Mikuláš Klimčák, who was born in Humenné, as well as the bodily remains of Saint Boniface.

The Jewish cemetery in Humenné is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in Slovakia by area. It was declared a national cultural monument on 17 July 2000 and was extensively reconstructed from 2005 to 2011.

The open-air museum in Humenné occupies a 4-hectare site that reflects the character of Upper Zemplín. The Humenné Manor houses the art-historical and natural-history exhibitions of the Vihorlat Museum, both of which are thematically connected with Upper Zemplín. In the historic rooms of the Renaissance manor house, the art-historical exhibition presents the residential culture of the nobility from the Renaissance to the 20th century.

Humenné Manor was originally built as a Renaissance manor house in 1610 and remodelled at the end of the 19th century based on French Baroque châteaux. Rare woody plants grow in the park next to Humenné Manor.

The Valaškovský Bridge over the Laborec dates from 1900 and is one of the oldest steel-structure bridges in the Prešov Self-Governing Region. Today, it is intended for pedestrians and cyclists and was declared a national cultural monument in 2017.

Brekov Castle was built at the end of the 13th century on the site of an older fortification dating from the period of Great Moravia. It can be reached from the village of Brekov after a walk of approximately ten minutes. Jasenov Castle can be reached from the village of Jasenov via a blue-marked trail in about 45 minutes; from Humenné railway station, the blue-marked trail takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Nature and Trails

The Humenský Sokol educational trail runs through the Humenský Sokol National Nature Reserve in the Vihorlat Mountains and is located in Humenné District. It is a moderately difficult circular trail that can be used year-round, with 10 stations, a length of 3.5 km and an elevation gain of 257 m.

The walking trail in Humenné is 4.0 km long, takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, and is marked blue and yellow. The first Nordic walking route from Humenné is 4.45 km long and takes approximately one hour.

Route 5880, the Švejk Cycling Route, connects Humenné railway station with Brestov nad Laborcom, Medzilaborce and Palota.

The cuisine of Upper Zemplín includes Mačanka and tatarčané pirohy. Their preparation is passed down through generations and can be experienced firsthand.
