Churches and Remembrance

The Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1880. Its tower is 25 metres high and holds three bells. The Church of the Presentation of the Lord preserves Gothic tracery windows as well as Gothic wall paintings and frescoes; at the same time, it is a national cultural monument. The nave also features a painted wooden ceiling. Visitors wishing to see the church outside services must arrange an appointment and a guided tour in advance.

At the entrance to the grounds of the Evangelical Church in Smrečany stands a memorial to those who fell in the First World War. It names 29 fallen men from Smrečany and complements the sacred buildings with a site explicitly dedicated to historical remembrance.

History and Local Culture

The Aristid Smrečiansky Manor House was originally built around 1750 in the Rococo style. Around 1810, its façade was altered in the Classical style, and it retains its original entrance gate with wooden doors. A tradition of amateur theatre also remains part of the area’s living culture to this day.

The Pamätná izba Smrečany preserves objects and documents relating to Smrečany’s more than seven-hundred-year history and the way of life of its inhabitants. Traditional wooden implements and original local clothing are on display. There, visitors can browse and read various editions of the works Jano and Stretutie while sitting at old school desks.

History and Landscape

Smrečany’s Hrádok is an ancient hillfort and is considered one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Liptov. Its origins date to the Hallstatt period, from the 6th to the 4th century BC. Hrádok is a spur terrace north of Smrečany’s Gothic church; an embankment has been preserved on its western side.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

The Green Zone along the Smrečianka offers a walk with stops at information panels. These also guide visitors to the village museum, the churches and the monuments. The walk through the Green Zone can be extended to the memorial to the victims of the Second World War battles on Háj-Nicovom.

Smrečany has numerous routes and trails for hiking, cycling, skiing, ski mountaineering and agrotourism. They enable sporting activities in both summer and winter. Via the Žiarska Valley, Smrečany is a gateway to the Western Tatras. The routes and trails mentioned are easily accessible from nearby Liptovský Mikuláš.
