Srbobran between Canals, Culture and Nature

Srbobran is a destination for travellers who want to combine canal landscapes, cultural history and regional traditions. Most of the town lies on the left bank of the Veliki Bački Canal, with a smaller part on the right bank. The canal connects Srbobran to international waterways via the Danube and the Tisa. Together with its location on the Danube–Tisa–Danube Canal and its proximity to major roads, this makes the town interesting for excursion, nautical and recreational tourism.

Canal, Nature and Activities

Those wishing to focus their trip on water and landscapes will find several different points of interest around Srbobran. The fishing area near Srbobran is located on the Krivaja, Beljanska Bara and the Veliki Bački Canal. In 2026, the fishing tournament “Udicom protiv droge” was organised again on the Veliki Bački Canal. The local community and the “Šaran” sport fishing club organised it with the support of the Municipality of Srbobran; primary school pupils from the municipality competed individually and in teams.

The “Beljanska Bara” Nature Park is also part of the municipality’s landscape: The protected natural area extends across the municipalities of Srbobran and Bečej. For travellers who want to combine experiences in nature with a regional focus, this natural area is a destination in its own right. The Srbobran hunting ground of the “Fazan” hunting association covers 18,400 hectares. The multifunctional sports hall in Srbobran is also used by sports clubs, schools and recreational athletes.

Cultural History and Living Traditions

The history of the town reaches far back. The oldest written record of Srbobran dates from 1338, when the settlement was mentioned under the name Szentomash. The present name Srbobran commemorates the battles of 1848. A specific glimpse into its cultural history is provided by the Church of the Epiphany: It was founded in 1787 and completed in 1807. The academic painter Novak Radonjić created its iconostasis; there is also a fresco of the Holy Trinity with the four Evangelists by Novak Radonjić.

Further historical points of interest include the Chapel of Saint George in the Orthodox cemetery of Srbobran, built in 1884 by the landowner Lazar Dunđerski, and the Freedom Monument in the central park. It was created in 1954 by the sculptor Stevan Bodnarev. Those who appreciate literature and visual art can make a note of the “Lenkin prsten” cultural award. It is presented every November by Dom kulture Srbobran for the best love poem written in Serbian and published for the first time between two award ceremonies. The “U Lenkinom prstenu” art colony has taken place every September since 2016 in the rustic courtyard of Dom kulture Srbobran and brings together more than 30 academic and naïve painters. The “Lenkino pero” literary award is presented for the best love poem by young talents aged 13 to 18.

Another facet of the municipality can be seen in Turija. In February 2026, the Kobasicijada reached its 42nd edition there. Thousands of visitors enjoyed homemade sausage and the tradition associated with it.
