Juzna-Backa combines impressive nature with fortresses, museums and places rich in tradition. In the Kovilj–Petrovaradin Moor, interconnected forest, meadow, moorland and aquatic ecosystems meet river islands, ponds and wetlands. Rare black storks and white-tailed eagles can be found there. A holiday apartment in Juzna-Backa can therefore serve as a suitable base for days in which nature observation, culture and active excursions are given different levels of emphasis.

Moorland landscape, cycling route and hiking loops

Kovilj is served by regular suburban bus route 24 from Novi Sad. The Kovilj–Petrovaradin Moor is also located along the Danube Cycle Route EuroVelo 6. Special PNG maps as well as GPX and KMZ tracks are available for free download for hikes in Fruška Gora National Park. The 23 recommended hiking routes there are loop trails and can be walked in both directions. This makes it easier to compare different tour lengths and daily rhythms.

At the Šlajz–Tikvara site in the Kovilj–Petrovaradin Moor, boat trips accompanied by supervisory staff can be arranged. This perspective complements the trails on foot and by bicycle with a water-based view of the wetlands.

Bač: Cultural landscape and fortress

The cultural landscape of Bač is shaped by the Danube, the Mostonga, wetlands, loess areas, riparian forests, marshes and freshwater habitats. The Bačko Podunavlje Biosphere Reserve has been part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2017. The Bač Fortress stands in this setting as a protected cultural monument of exceptional importance. Together with the Orthodox Bođani Monastery and the Bač Franciscan Monastery, it is one of the three significant cultural assets of the cultural landscape of Bač, which are central to understanding its history and character.

Bač Fortress can be reached from Bač via a paved pedestrian bridge, through the Varoš Gate and along Bačke tvrđave Street. By car, access is via the Bač–Vajska road in the direction of the Donjon Tower. Petrovaradin Fortress offers a different cultural accent: On the clock tower, the large hand shows the hours and the small hand shows the minutes. The main building of the Novi Sad City Museum in the fortress displays the permanent exhibitions “The Fortress in the Past” and “Novi Sad from the 18th to the 20th Century.”

Petrovaradin between crafts, history and festival

Petrovaradin Fortress also includes the Underground Military Galleries, a four-storey communication and defence system with a length of 10 miles. The fortress terrace with the Officers’ Pavilion offers a view of Novi Sad. Atelier 61 is home to a workshop for large-format artistic tapestries, founded in 1961, which preserves the tradition of producing textile goods. A major annual event held in July is the EXIT Festival at Petrovaradin Fortress.

Sremski Karlovci: Urban history, museum and wine

The town centre of Sremski Karlovci is a cultural and historical entity of exceptional importance. Sremski Karlovci was the seat of the Serbian metropolitanate; it is also home to Karlovac High School, considered the oldest secondary school of the Serbs. The Muzej vojvođanskih Slovaka (Múzeum vojvodinských Slovákov) contains historical, ethnological and artistic museum collections. Its aim is to research, document, present and preserve material and spiritual evidence from the past of the Vojvodina Slovaks.

The wine tradition also shapes Sremski Karlovci. Wine production and wine tours are among the most important tourist offerings there. The wine cellars offer optional tastings combined with the local winemaking tradition and Srem specialities such as a Srem snack, poppy-seed strudel or kuglof. This provides clear guidance when choosing a holiday apartment in Juzna-Backa based on personal interests: the moor and wildlife observation, hiking loops and cycling route, fortress history, museums, or wine and regional specialities can determine the desired focus.
