Remains of the church “Crkva Svete Bogorodice” have survived; it stands on the foundations of an early Byzantine basilica and was built during the same period as the church “Crkva Svetog Nikole”. Another Byzantine basilica is protected as an immovable cultural monument. At the site of the late antique basilica, conserved foundations of a structure dated to the 6th or 7th century have been preserved.

Churches, Monuments and Historical References in the City

In the city centre stands the church “Crkva Svete Trojice”, built in 1902 and belonging to the Morava architectural school. Its significance also extends into local festive traditions: the traditional celebration of the city of Kuršumlija for Velika Gospojina begins with a liturgy in this church. The monument to the liberators of Kuršumlija stands in the central city park. It was unveiled in 1896 and commemorates Serbian fighters who fell in the wars from 1876 to 1878.

Further historical points of reference complete this picture. In antiquity, a settlement called Ad Fines stood at the site of present-day Kuršumlija. A historic Roman road also passed through the area and was later called the Dubrovnik Road. Near Kastrat, Markova crkva is classified as a cultural monument. The wider settlement area of Kuršumlija is considered a historic cultural landscape.
