Discover Knić: Culture, Nature and Rural Experiences

Knić combines a rural atmosphere with a remarkable density of cultural monuments, hiking trails and regional events. Those wishing to plan a trip featuring nature, history and special experiences will find various opportunities here. Authentic rural households continue to be one of the defining foundations of agrotourism in the Knić area. Tourism development also began here as early as the 1970s, when the first guests discovered the appeal of rural life and the hospitality of the hosts.

Hiking between Kotlenik and the Gledić Mountains

For active days, the marked and signposted hiking trail from Leskovac via Kotlenik to Knić is an option. The route is 26.5 kilometres long and should be taken into account when planning your day. The Kotlenik area also has ten marked hiking trails leading from the surrounding villages of Pajsijević, Leskovac, Guberevac, Guncati, Sirča, Trgovište and Miločaj. This allows you to plan hikes from different starting points without committing to a single route.

Another option for hiking enthusiasts is the annual “Gledićka transverzala” event in the Gledić Mountains. Together with the trails around Kotlenik, it creates a varied picture of the landscape around Knić. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first considering whether your trip will be shaped more by longer hikes, cultural discoveries or a combination of both.

Cultural Monuments and Stories from the Surrounding Area

Borački Krš is protected as a Category I natural monument. Its geological and geomorphological features, as well as its characteristic flora and fauna, give this landscape its distinctive character. The remains of the medieval town of Borač lie at the summit of Borački Krš, 7.5 kilometres north of Knić. The medieval town is protected as a cultural asset of great importance. The old cemetery in the village of Borač near Knić is also protected as a cultural monument.

The Boračka Church, mentioned in written records from 1346 and 1350, is located near Knić. Next to the church is a medieval cemetery with characteristic Kapačara monuments; the oldest date from the 16th century. The Kamenac Monastery is also located nearby. According to tradition, it was founded at the beginning of the 15th century by Despot Stefan Lazarević, while the monastery’s earliest history is unknown. The sisterhood makes herbal balms, teas and tinctures from plants gathered in the surrounding area and grown by the community itself.

Other historical destinations include the memorial house in Toponica, which is protected as an immovable cultural asset and cultural monument and served as the headquarters of the Kragujevac Partisan Detachment in 1941, as well as Čestin Gradina, which is protected as a cultural asset and archaeological site.

Events, Photography and Water Experiences

Knić’s cultural life is reflected in several traditional events. “Knićansko leto” traditionally takes place on 2 August and 19 August. A cultural and artistic programme is held outdoors in front of the Knić Cultural Centre. “Dani Stevana Knićanina” takes place every year in September. In May, “Gružansko proleće” focuses on young people and the development of their talents.

The two-day “Gruža-Borač-Knić” Photo Safari Festival has been organised in the Municipality of Knić for almost a decade. Photography enthusiasts are invited to capture landscapes, cultural and historical monuments, and ethnographic motifs. Following the festival, the art exhibition “Knić i Gruža kroz objektiv” is organised under the patronage of, and according to the rules of, the Photo Association of Serbia.

For a different pace of holiday, nearby Lake Gružansko offers a rowing course. If you would like to combine nature, culture and activity, you can take these different priorities into account when choosing your accommodation. A holiday apartment in Knić is particularly well suited to a trip in which the town’s rural character is just as important as excursions to hiking trails, monuments and events.
