Golubinje lies on the Danube, next to the mouth of the Porečka River. The river is also part of the settlement’s history: present-day Golubinje is located 3 km upstream from the older Malo Golubinje. The population was relocated because of flooding. If you are looking for a waterside holiday destination with a specific local history, you will find both here in the same geographical setting: the riverside location and the change in the settlement site are connected.

The Danube and a geological feature

A geological feature adds another dimension to this picture. The tectonic nappe “Tectonic Nappe Golubinje” is considered an exposure of Proterozoic crystalline schist. An exposure is a place where rock is visible at the Earth’s surface; “Proterozoic” refers to a very early geological era. This means the location can be understood not only through its settlement and architecture, but also in terms of Earth’s history. For travellers interested in nature in its geological form too, this offers a different perspective on Golubinje from its immediate connection with the Danube.

Architecture and history

In Đerdap National Park, Golubinje is highlighted among settlements with valuable traditional architecture. This includes 19th-century houses that were relocated close to the Lepenski Vir archaeological site. The construction of traditional houses and their relocation thus stand side by side as two aspects of local history. The architecture offers a distinct way of discovering Golubinje, alongside its geological features and location on the Danube.

The history of settlement goes back further still. Golubinje was founded in a place with traces of earlier settlement, including the prehistoric site of Rečica and remains from antiquity. Finds from the Roman period have also been discovered in Golubinje. These archaeological traces reach significantly further back than the 19th-century houses and provide several points of reference for the area’s history.

One precise date adds to the picture: in 1808, representatives of insurgent Serbia and the Ottoman side met in Golubinje for peace negotiations. This meeting connects the location with a clearly dated episode in its political history, distinct from the long-term traces of settlement and architecture.

The Danube riverfront also has a distinctive history. A municipal publication singled out Golubinje among Danube-side fishing spots, particularly for sport fishing. Thus, alongside geology, architectural and settlement history, a specific riverside activity is another possible focus.

Golubinje as a holiday destination

Golubinje lies on the road between Donji Milanovac and Tekija. This road connection complements the river as another geographical point of reference. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider the location according to your preferred focus: its riverside setting, traditional architecture, settlement history or sport fishing. Golubinje is worth considering for a stay if you would like to combine these interests with a holiday destination on the Danube.
