Discover Kladusnica: Đerdap, Diana and cycling routes

Kladusnica combines landscapes, archaeology and varied excursions in the Danube region. The area is one of the 17 cadastral municipalities within which Đerdap National Park extends. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment for a varied vacation will find a base here for historical discoveries, geological topics and cycling routes of different lengths.

Danube Terraces and the Landscape of Đerdap

A distinctive geological feature is the Danube terrace near Kladušnica. It consists of sediments from a river terrace and documents a phase during which the Danube cut into the edge of the Southern Carpathians. The terrace has NP3 protection status. Ancient river terraces are also visible in the surrounding area, showing the position of the Danube during the last ice age.

The Sinaia flysch is also part of the region's geological history. It is a sequence of sedimentary rocks with varying compositions and grain sizes that formed around 130–140 million years ago during intense tectonic activity, when the formation of the Carpathians began. The rocky peak of Đevrin rises to a height of 434 m in the nearby area. From there, you can look out over the Sip Gorge and the “Đerdap 1” hydropower plant.

Kladusnica was established in the former riverbed of the Danube and was relocated wholly or partly when Đerdap Lake was created. This historical development gives the village a special connection to the transformation of the river landscape.

Roman History and Regional Culture

For days focused on culture, the Roman fortification of Diana Karataš in the vicinity of Kladusnica is an excellent choice. It was built at the end of the 1st century AD and is one of the best-preserved Roman fortifications in the region. Diana Fortress is also protected by the Republic of Serbia as a monument of exceptional importance.

Another historical site is the Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Kladusnica, built in 1838. The “Đerdap 1” hydropower plant adds an aspect of industrial heritage to the historical destinations. It is located 2.5 km upstream from Diana and is considered an outstanding attraction in this area of interest. According to local tradition, some boatmen who hauled boats through Đerdap also settled in Kladusnica.

Road 35/E771 from Kladovo to Diana Fortress passes through Kladusnica and Davidovac. This also allows the village to be incorporated into a journey between the cultural and landscape destinations mentioned above, without having to choose your accommodation exclusively based on a single excursion destination.

Cycling Routes for Different Day Plans

Several described recreational cycling routes are available for an active trip. The Manastirica–Kladovo–Kladušnica–Davidovac–Manastirica–Kladovo circular cycling route is 29 km long. A longer circular cycling route leads from Banja Cave via Kladovo, Kladušnica, Davidovac and Petrovo Selo back to Kladovo and covers 38.4 km.

Another recreational cycling route connects Kladovo and Drobeta-Turnu Severin with Kladušnica, Davidovac and Novi Šip. It passes through Serbia and Romania and is suitable for bicycles of all kinds. The different route lengths help you plan your vacation day according to your preferred radius.

Geology and Orientation for Excursions

The georoute from the Archaeological Museum of Đerdap in Kladovo to the Geo-Interpretation Centre in Tekija includes the geological profile of the Danube terrace near Kladušnica. The Geo-Interpretation Centre provides information about hiking trails, georoutes and other tourist facilities in Đerdap National Park and the Đerdap UNESCO Geopark. Such information can be helpful when planning your trip if, in addition to Roman history, you would also like to explore the region's geological features.

Accommodation in Kladusnica is therefore particularly suitable for a vacation in which you would like to combine culture, river landscapes, geology and cycling. When searching for a holiday apartment, compare which specific location best suits your planned excursions and preferred daily itinerary.
