Rybinsk tells its story on different scales: its museums preserve memories of a flooded landscape and Admiral Ushakov, while the New Grain Exchange itself is an architectural attraction. Together, these themes make for a cultural stay in which exhibitions and the design of an important building offer different ways to explore the past.

Mologa and Admiral Ushakov: Two Museum Themes

The main exhibition at the Museum of the Mologa Region is devoted to the natural, cultural and historical heritage of the Mologa-Sheksna interfluve. This area was flooded in the 1930s following the construction of the Rybinsk Reservoir. The focus is therefore on landscape and cultural history: the exhibition brings to life an area whose former appearance is linked to the creation of the reservoir. For planning your trip, the museum offers a clear thematic focus if you are interested in the history of a transformed river and lake landscape.

The Museum of Admiral F. F. Ushakov displays original 18th-century artefacts connected to his life and career. The exhibition also includes a historical reconstruction of his uniform, naval uniforms, edged and firearms, and optical and navigational instruments. Coronation, military and commemorative medals and badges dating from Peter I to Alexander I round out the collection. Alongside the history of the landscape, the museum offers a visit shaped by personal and military history: instruments, uniforms and decorations bring different aspects of the era to life.

The New Grain Exchange as a Building

The New Grain Exchange was built in 1912 in the Neo-Russian style, based on a design by Moscow architect Alexander Vasilyevich Ivanov. The brick building is faced on the outside with German tiles. The 211 colourful tiles featuring motifs such as double-headed eagles, pearls, plants and flowers are especially detailed. The design combines a clearly recognisable style with many individual façade details; architecture enthusiasts can look from the building as a whole to its recurring motifs.

Since 1993, the Rybinsk State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve has been housed in the New Grain Exchange. Check current visitor access before your visit. Another stop on the city’s historical trail is the Old Grain Exchange, also known as the Pilots’ Exchange: it features on Rybinsk excursion routes. The two exchanges therefore offer different ways to experience Rybinsk’s architectural history—as a museum building described here and as part of excursion routes.

A Glimpse of Yaroslavl Oblast

Beyond the city itself, Yaroslavl Oblast offers distinctive cultural and natural attractions. Twelve historic towns, including Rybinsk, are considered the oblast’s main attractions; each has its own character and atmosphere. As a natural highlight of the region, Pleshcheyevo Ozero National Park is a federally significant protected area. It is important for nature conservation, environmental education and recreation, and is distinguished by diverse natural habitats, rare or well-preserved ecological communities, and rare and endangered plant and animal species.

The one-kilometre “V gostyakh u Seroy Tsapli” ecological walking trail runs along the northeastern shore of Lake Pleshcheyevo, through an open shoreline area directly beside the water. Its facilities include a wooden boardwalk, a viewing tower on the lakeshore and three information boards. Along the trail, visitors can learn about around 50 bird species that live there and their biology. Also on the northeastern shore, opposite the turn-off for Gorodishche, there is a sailing area and a National Park boat station. Check local operating conditions and current services before travelling.

Rybinsk and the attractions around Lake Pleshcheyevo offer different experiences in Yaroslavl Oblast: the city’s museums and architectural history on the one hand, and a natural area with a designated walking trail and sailing area on the other. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first consider whether Rybinsk’s cultural sites or the lake’s natural attractions will be the main focus of your trip. This will help you choose the right area to search for accommodation.
