Danilov: Chess Alley, Museums and Merchant History
Accommodation in Danilov
Chess pieces as town characters, preserved merchant houses and a museum collection spanning crafts and nature: Danilov offers different ways to discover its history and everyday life. There are also routes through historic urban spaces and summer activities in the surrounding area. Which of these aspects interests you most can also help you decide whether Danilov is the right place to search for a holiday apartment.
Chess Pieces and Merchant History
The Chess Alley in the Central Square Garden at Sovetskaya Square features chess pieces as sculptures depicting 19th-century town characters. It is considered the only avenue in Russia with this design. The figures give your walk an unusual theme: instead of abstract chess pieces, you encounter depictions of town characters.
Danilov’s historic center has preserved trading arcades and merchant houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The old Merchant Letniy Sad is also located there. Its shady avenues and paths offer a different perspective on the urban landscape; the garden also serves as a venue for various holidays and public events. The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Danilov was built in 1893.
Museums Spanning Everyday Culture and Art
The collection of the Danilov Historical and Local History Museum named after P. K. Sharapov covers the history of the Danilov area, its past and present, crafts and trades, as well as the district’s traditions and customs. Local nature, animals and birds are also among its subjects. The museum occupies the entire building, a historical and cultural monument of federal significance. It previously housed a municipal boys’ school.
The Danilov Art Gallery has a folk art exhibition hall on the first floor and a 130 m² exhibition space for contemporary art on the second. The gallery’s program includes workshops, musical and literary-musical salons, and lectures. As specific dates may vary, check the current program if you have a particular visit in mind.
At the Historical and Local History Museum, visitors can take part in a matchmaking ritual and try on clothing from earlier times. Before making plans, check with the museum whether these activities will be available during your visit. This lets you tailor your museum visit to the collection, local history or interactive activities.
Walks and Summer Activities
The Danilovsky Promenade connects two historic centers with preserved 19th-century merchant houses. Models of old bicycles and balance bikes are also on display along the promenade. The route thus combines historic city views with a look at earlier means of transport.
In the area surrounding the destination, at the body of water by the “Sosnovy Bor na Gorushke” natural monument in Gorushka, Danilovsky District, summer activities include swimming, sunbathing, camping in a tent, boating and fishing. Check local conditions in advance. These activities complement an exploration of Danilov; they are not part of the historic town center.
Local produce is also mentioned among the culinary offerings: these include pastries and pryaniki, cheese and butter.
Danilov as a Base for Your Accommodation Search
If you are primarily interested in exploring Chess Alley, the museums and historic buildings, Danilov may be the right location to use as a reference for your search for a holiday apartment. If you also plan to spend time at the body of water by the natural monument, consider the location of your accommodation in relation to the places you want to visit. This way, your search reflects the priorities of your trip rather than a general idea of what accommodation should offer.
