Discover Burtsevo
Accommodation in Burtsevo
When choosing Burtsevo as a travel destination, you can also consider the wider region of Yaroslavl Oblast when planning your trip. There, nature experiences at Lake Pleshcheyevo sit alongside historic buildings and museums with a range of different focuses. You can tailor your trip to whether you prefer spending time outdoors, discovering architecture, or making time for exhibitions and hands-on activities.
Lakeside scenery and nature at Lake Pleshcheyevo
On the northeastern shore of Lake Pleshcheyevo, the “V gostyakh u Seroy Tsapli” ecological trail runs through an open lakeside area, right by the water. The trail is one kilometre long. Its facilities include a wooden boardwalk, a lookout tower on the shore, and three information panels. Along the way, you can learn about around 50 bird species that live there and their biology. The combination of a short route, lakeside views, and information about nature gives the trail a clear focus: observing and understanding the landscape takes centre stage here.
Also on the northeastern shore of the lake, opposite the turnoff to Gorodishche, there is a boat station belonging to Pleshcheyevo Ozero National Park. There is also a zone for sailing at this location, which the park lists for visitor use. Check the local operating conditions and the station’s current offerings before your trip.
Historic buildings and museums
In Pereslavl-Zalessky stands the 12th-century Transfiguration Cathedral. It is the city’s oldest church and is considered the earliest surviving architectural monument of the Vladimir-Suzdal school. Those interested in contemporary art will find a different focus at the “Na Rostovskoi” Museum Centre, which holds at least 30 exhibitions of contemporary artists each year. Medieval architecture and changing art exhibitions thus cater to two very different cultural interests in the same city.
Rybinsk combines museum visits with the history of its buildings. The Rybinsk Museum-Reserve is housed in the New Grain Exchange, built in 1912 to a design by Moscow architect A. V. Ivanov on the high bank of the Volga. At the N. M. Alekseyev Museum of the Mologa Region, you can visit the galleries; its offerings also include interactive programmes with competitions, prizes, and refreshments. “Bazarnyy den” and “Remeslu vezde poch yot” are the names of such events. Check with the museum for the current schedule.
Another example of historic architecture is the Uglich Kremlin. Its ensemble includes buildings from the 15th to the 19th centuries, including the Princes’ Chambers, the Church of Tsarevich Dmitry, and the former City Duma building, which houses museum exhibitions. The Transfiguration Cathedral has a bell tower and is Uglich’s main active place of worship. The complex covers 33,560 square metres and also includes a park with trees dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, a pond, and a moat. The park is considered an example of late 19th-century garden and landscape design. The architecture and park offer different perspectives on the same place.
Hands-on activities and special collections
At the “Emalis” Yaroslavl Enamel Art Museum, visitors can learn about the history of the craft and see works by Russian and European artists. They can also make a pendant or a picture themselves; it’s best to check the current workshop arrangements with the museum in advance. The Metropolitan’s Chambers in Yaroslavl have a different focus: the building was constructed in 1682 by Metropolitan Jonah Sysoyevich and has been used since 1977 for a department of Old Russian art, an exhibition, and exhibition halls. The exhibitions and permanent display feature more than 500 works of icon painting.
The collection at the “Kukushka” Locomotive Museum also appeals to a particular interest: it includes railway cars, locomotives, railway equipment, and automobiles dating from the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century. The visitor experience described includes sitting in historic railway cars and taking a ride through dense forest on a hand-powered rail trolley. If you plan this activity, check the current arrangements before your visit.
In Veskovo, the “Boat of Peter I” museum estate preserves the boat “Fortuna.” It is described as a unique monument to Russian military shipbuilding and Pereslavl’s main attraction, and forms part of a permanent exhibition. The examples in Yaroslavl Oblast range from nature observation and active pursuits to architecture, crafts, and collections tracing the history of technology. When choosing your holiday rental in Burtsevo, you can consider which of these travel interests you’d like to shape your stay.
