This gives you several ways to get to know the place—on foot, through its architecture, or through exhibition and collection themes.
The Historic Walking Route through Tarko-Sale
The walk is listed as 4.5 kilometres long and taking an hour and a half; there are twelve sites along the route. These figures give you a concrete time frame for planning, without requiring you to infer a walking pace. If you plan to follow the route, confirm the current arrangements with the museum before your visit.
Memorial Sites and Distinctive Architecture
The memorial complex to soldiers from Purovsky District stands at the intersection of Lenin and Respubliki Streets. It includes a stele shaped like a stylised tree trunk and rifle bayonet, as well as a memorial wall bearing the names of fallen soldiers. A monument in the form of a border post completes the site. Two M-30 howitzers, 122 millimetres in calibre, model 1938, and a T-64 tank stand beside them. These different forms connect commemoration with specific military objects and a wall of names.
A different perspective on remembrance is offered by the 16-metre-high stele «S gorizonta prishedschije». It commemorates the Indigenous inhabitants of Purovsky District who have lived in the area for a long time, and depicts settlers travelling by boat on a river. The stele was created by architect Alexander Novikov and sculptor Andrey Chernyshev from Yekaterinburg. Its subject and dedication give the structure a different focus from the soldiers’ memorial complex.
The church offers another architectural perspective: it was built in the Russian-Byzantine tradition in the shape of a ship and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia. Its style, shape and dedication make it a different subject from the monuments commemorating historical events and local residents.
Museum: History, Culture and Nature
The Purovsky District Museum of History and Local Lore was founded in 1972 as a volunteer-run museum. It has permanent exhibitions on the history of the district, the peoples of the North and the district’s wildlife. Check the current exhibition information before your visit.
The collection includes a chainmail shirt and helmet belonging to a Russian warrior from the 17th century, an anthropomorphic representation of the Forest Nenets goddess «Jankata», and a shaman’s drum with a beater. The selection thus ranges from historical objects to representations and instruments connected with the cultures of the North. The collection should not be confused with the permanent exhibitions: the items mentioned are collection objects, and their current exhibition status is not specified.
