Muravlenko: Art, Monuments and Memorial Sites
Accommodation in Muravlenko
Muravlenko presents its history and present through monuments, memorial sites and art in public spaces. The themes range from a monument in the central square and a memorial to the end of the war to sculptures that reflect the city’s landmarks and cultural diversity. This makes it possible to combine a stay with a look at a wide variety of ways of remembering and creating.
Monuments and Memorial Sites
The monument to V. I. Muravlenko stands in Muravlenko’s central square, opposite the city administration building. It was erected on September 14, 2002, on the 90th anniversary of Muravlenko’s birth. The exact location and date give the monument a special connection to the city: it is both a landmark in the square and a reminder of the occasion for its installation.
Another historical memory is preserved by the memorial site «Vsem ubiennym ot blagodarnykh zhivykh Muravlenkovtsev». It consists of a memorial plaque and a capsule containing a message to future generations. It was installed in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945. The memorial site is in Muravlenko, 50 meters from the city registry office.
A Square as a Sign of Cultural Diversity
The «Druzhby narodov» square was created as a symbol of the cultural ties among the different nationalities and ethnic groups living in Muravlenko. An account dated May 29, 2025, states that more than 70 nationalities and ethnic groups live in Muravlenko. The square’s main work of art is an illuminated rotunda, 15 meters high. Its size and lighting make it a striking work of art in this culturally distinctive urban space.
Other works add their own distinctive touches. The bronze sculpture «Detyam Severa posvyashchaetsya» depicts a woman holding a child close with one arm. With her other hand, she holds a laurel branch and the keys to the city above her head; the keys are symbols of Muravlenko. An account from 2025 also describes a climbing wall shaped like an iceberg and structures shaped like chum tents in the square.
Sculptures with Different Themes
The contemporary art installation «Fontan» is located in one of Muravlenko’s most important and largest green spaces: a purple sculpture depicting a man and a woman drilling into the ground together. Another work recalls the Patriotic War of 1812. The sculpture «Khleb nashey pamyati» is associated with its 200th anniversary.
Muravlenko has more than ten installations. These include «Ponimanie», «Kamen zhelaniy», «Mysh vyazhet DNK» and «Beskonechnost». Their names point to different themes; together with the figurative sculpture and memorial sites, they offer a variety of ways to engage with the city’s art. If you are looking for a holiday rental, this variety can help you decide whether Muravlenko and its urban cultural sites match your travel interests.
In the wider destination of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug
A distinct focus on nature and ethnography can be found in Gornoknyazevsk: the nature and ethnography complex was established there in 2001 to preserve and promote the national spiritual and material cultures of the indigenous small-numbered peoples of northern Yamal. Gornoknyazevsk is in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
The «Chumovye posidelki» program at the ethnopark in Gornoknyazevsk includes a guided tour about the lives and everyday activities of the indigenous peoples of the North. It also covers the construction and transportation of the chum. The program includes traditional cleansing rituals involving smoke and offerings to local spirits, during which a ribbon is tied to a sacred birch, as well as workshops on making traditional toys and jewelry. It also features stories about Khanty folk tales. Visits are intended for organized groups and must be booked in advance; availability may vary.
The «Ingilor» nature park is also in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. It is home to rare ecosystems and animals listed in Russia’s Red Data Book. Thus, within the wider destination, nature-themed attractions sit alongside cultural and ethnographic offerings, while Muravlenko itself is defined here by its monuments and artworks.
