Veliky Ustyug combines the history of the city and church art with regional crafts and discoveries about the history of the Earth. Its themes range from icons and manuscripts to Christmas tree decorations from several periods. Near the city, Father Frost’s estate adds a fairy-tale trail and a branch of the Moscow Zoo to the cultural programme.

City History, Icons and Church Architecture

The Veliky Ustyug Museum of History and Culture covers the city’s history and culture from the 12th to the 20th century. The museum offers guided tours, workshops and interactive activities. If you have a particular offering in mind, check what is currently available before your visit.

The Museum of Old Russian Art combines a collection with a distinctive church building: it is housed in the Church of the Ascension, built in 1648, where six 18th-century iconostases have been preserved. The collections include Ustyug icon painting from the 15th to the 18th century and works of Stroganov facial embroidery. They also include manuscripts and early printed works from the libraries of Ustyug’s monasteries and churches. The icons span several centuries, while the manuscripts and early printed works offer another way to explore the region’s written heritage.

The architecture of the Church of the Ascension can also be described in specific detail: three tiers of kokoshniki crown the main structure, topped by five faceted domes with pinched-in profiles. Openwork wrought-iron crosses complete the building. Those interested in historic churches will find a complex of old churches on Sobornoye Dvorishche, Veliky Ustyug’s oldest square and spiritual centre. These include the Cathedral of the Dormition and its bell tower, as well as the active St Procopius Cathedral. The Cathedral of the Dormition was the first stone city cathedral in the entire Russian North. If you are considering a visit to St Procopius Cathedral, check access arrangements in advance.

Crafts and Discoveries

The Ethnographic Museum showcases folk art from the Ustyug region in a range of materials and techniques: patterned weaving, embroidery, resist-dyeing, wood carving and painting, as well as blacksmithing and openwork crafts. Ceramics are also represented, with pieces dating from the 17th to the early 20th century. The collection therefore highlights different objects and forms of craftsmanship from those in the Museum of Old Russian Art, with its icons, embroidery and manuscripts.

The exhibition “The Living Past of the Earth” at the region’s Natural History Museum focuses on palaeontological finds and discoveries from the area around Veliky Ustyug. It includes, among other things, remains of pareiasaurs and Ice Age animals. Visitors can assemble a model pareiasaur skeleton, complete puzzles and learn what a dicynodont looked like. Alongside the finds, the programme includes hands-on activities and an engaging encounter with a prehistoric animal.

The exhibition at the Museum of New Year and Christmas Toys spans a different period. It traces the history of Christmas and New Year decorations in Russia and displays almost 3,000 Christmas tree ornaments dating from the early 20th century to the present day. The collection size may change over time. Alongside the city history and craft collections, the exhibition offers a look at different subjects and periods, rather than focusing on just one type of cultural heritage.

From the City’s Cultural Programme to the Estate

Father Frost’s estate is 12 kilometres from Veliky Ustyug. A fairy-tale trail with riddles and entertaining activities winds through the grounds; the estate is also home to the Moscow Zoo branch, “Zoosad Deda Moroza”. The estate offers a different focus from the city’s churches and museums: its described attractions centre on the trail and the zoo branch.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Veliky Ustyug, you can take these different interests into account when deciding where to stay. If churches, museums and collections are to shape your trip, plan around the city’s cultural sites. If you would also like to visit the estate, consider it a separate destination outside the city.
