Mikhaylovka: Local History Museum and Memorial Sites
Accommodation in Mikhaylovka
Mikhaylovka brings together the town’s history, memorial sites, and a designated hiking excursion. The local history museum is housed in a merchant’s house dating from 1905; in the town center, an obelisk with an eternal flame was erected in 1966. Other memorial sites commemorate the Civil War and the Second World War. This gives families and other travelers interested in regional history a range of themes to explore during their stay.
Local History Museum in a Merchant’s House
The Mikhaylovka Local History Museum is located at 82 Mira Street in the former home of merchant Semyon Pavlovich Aksyonov, built in 1905. In 1918, a meeting was held in this house at which the first revolutionary committee of the Ust-Medveditsky District was elected. The permanent exhibitions cover the Sebryakovs of the Medveditsa, merchant life in the Mikhaylovka settlement, the home front, and the traditions and everyday life of the Don Cossacks. The region’s animals and birds are also among the exhibition themes. The exhibits thus span life in the settlement, regional nature, and everyday culture. You can visit the exhibition independently with an admission ticket; check current admission arrangements with the museum before your visit.
Memorial Sites in the Town
In 1966, residents of Mikhaylovka erected an obelisk with an eternal flame in the town center at their own expense. It is the town’s main victory monument. In front of the obelisk is the “Heroes’ Alley,” with photographs and short biographies of Mikhaylovka residents who were Heroes of the Soviet Union. A monument to the heroes of the 1921–1922 Civil War stands by the Kosmos Cultural Center. These memorial sites bring together memories of different chapters in history.
In Victory Park, a path leads to a mass grave of Soviet soldiers who fell during the Battle of Stalingrad. The park also contains steles dedicated to the military branches, a statue of a warrior liberator, and an installation in the form of five stars; there is also a venue for patriotic events. Individual features may change. The memorials in the park add tangible reminders of the past and a dedicated event venue to the townscape.
One route begins on the station forecourt by Sebryakovo railway station. There is a monument to railway workers who died in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945; the grave of locomotive driver V. M. Turygin is on the same square. A monument to Ruben Ibarruri stands by School No. 7. On Lenin Street, opposite School No. 1, is a mass grave of Soviet soldiers who fell during the Battle of Stalingrad. The museum at School No. 10 can also be included: admission is free, but the visit must be arranged with the school administration.
