Between the Volga and the Don, Gorodishchenskiy District lies in the Pre-Volga Upland, 15 kilometres northwest of Volgograd. River and floodplain landscapes, memorial sites and seasonal activities give the district a variety of travel highlights. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to consider whether you want to focus mainly on the landscape, historic sites or activities associated with a particular time of year.

River landscapes and seasonal plans

The Volga and the Don, with their floodplain forests, form recreational areas with white sandy beaches for residents and tourists. If you want to combine your stay with river and floodplain scenery, this makes nature a clear focus. Beach conditions and access may vary.

In autumn and winter, fishing, hunting and mushroom picking are among the popular activities for many visitors and residents of Gorodishchenskiy District. The season itself therefore becomes a deciding factor: you can weigh a focus on seasonal activities against plans centred more on the museum and memorial sites. For a group with different interests, this can help you first decide whether the season or the history should shape your stay.

Memorial sites and culture in Gorodishche

The “Soldatskoye Pole” Memorial Complex opened in Gorodishche in 1975. Alongside this memorial site, the Soviet military cemetery near Rossoshka is one of the district’s historical and cultural places to visit. The two names represent different chapters in the region’s culture of remembrance.

The Gorodishche Museum of History and Local Lore, named after G. S. Shapovalova, has permanent exhibitions on the history of the interfluve, the Don Front in the Battle of Stalingrad and the more recent history of the interfluve. The topics thus range from the history of the interfluve to a specific theatre of war and back to more recent regional history.

The history of the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Vsekh skorbyashchikh Radoste” in Gorodishche can also be traced through several dates: it was closed in 1936 and badly damaged by fire in 1973; the parish was re-established in 1990. The church is considered a sacred site for pilgrims. The Church of the Resurrection and the Church of Archangel Michael are also considered sacred sites for pilgrims in the district.

Two routes, two ways to plan

The educational route “Po dorogam pamyati Gorodishchenskogo rayona” visits sites associated with the Battle of Stalingrad and is designed as a two- to three-day educational hike. It passes through Novaya Nadezhda, the monument to five tank crew members, the Novaya Nadezhda spring and Nadezhda Pond. The route is intended for students aged 12 to 18, giving it a distinct focus for a multi-day history itinerary.

The “Marshrut zdorovya” circular trail is 6,700 metres long and includes climbs, descents, flat sections and rest areas. It ends at the “Soldatskoye Pole” Memorial Complex. The two routes differ considerably in the time they require: a distance is specified for the circular trail, while the educational route is designed to take two to three days. This lets you distinguish a circular walk with a stated length from a multi-day educational programme without confusing their different measurements.
