Vladimir combines white-stone architecture, urban history and a variety of museum experiences. The Dormition Cathedral and the Golden Gate represent the city’s architectural side; exhibitions and the Patriarch's Garden add other perspectives to the mix. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether you would like to focus your trip on churches and history, exhibitions or gardens.

Churches and history in Vladimir

The Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir is an outstanding monument of white-stone architecture dating from the 12th to the 19th century. It houses a museum exhibition and is also an active church. It is also described as the only church in Russia where more than 300 square metres of frescoes by the famous icon painter Andrei Rublev have been preserved. The building’s history and its large-scale frescoes offer two different perspectives on the same structure.

The Golden Gate is located in Vladimir’s historic centre and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered an outstanding monument of ancient Russian architecture. The gate also houses a military history exhibition about the battle during the Mongol-Tatar invasion of 1238. This connects a specific chapter of the city’s history with the building.

Museums between everyday life and art

The “Palaty” museum complex features interactive exhibitions at the Children's Museum Centre, art galleries and the exhibition “Masterpieces of Old Russian Icon Painting”. The Historical Museum offers a different way to explore the city’s history: its exhibition has been open since 1906, and the museum is the oldest continuously operating exhibition complex in the museum reserve.

The “Old Vladimir” Museum focuses on urban everyday culture in the 19th and 20th centuries and is housed in a former water tower. The tower was built in 1912 and remained in operation until the mid-20th century. The Museum of the History of Pharmacy in Vladimir Oblast and throughout Russia, opened in 2017, takes a broader thematic approach. It is located at the site of Vladimir’s former state pharmacy.

Gardens and hands-on activities

The “Vladimir Lights” Museum offers an interactive guided tour programme, as well as workshops on writing with a quill and ink, painting candles and making a “Newton’s daisy”. Check which activities are currently available before your visit.

The garden’s history began in the 12th century, and it offers panoramic views of the southern part of the city. If you would like to combine a visit to the garden with a guided tour or one of the other activities, it is advisable to check their current availability in advance.
