Sobinskiy District combines a landscape of lakes with places whose cultural themes range from literature to the history of science. At Isikhra, a glacial relic and bird migration take centre stage; at Suekhra, summer recreation and an old river landscape are part of the picture. In Alepino, Orekhovo and Cherkutino, museums and historic ensembles explore a range of subjects. So when choosing your holiday apartment, the first thing to consider is which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

Lakes, bird migration and varied landscapes

The Isikhra Lake natural monument is an unbogged remnant of an ancient glacial lake. The peat bog “Aserchovo” formed where the former lake once lay. During bird migration, water-dependent bird species and waterfowl stop at the lake, including ducks, geese and waders. Rare species found there include the osprey, white-tailed eagle and whooper swan. The species present may vary by season and year.

The forest lake Suekhra formed as an oxbow of the Klyazma and has long been disconnected from the river. In summer, the lake is used for swimming and fishing; several fire pits and designated rest areas are located on its shores. Please observe the applicable protected-area rules during your stay. The lakes have distinct natural features: at Isikhra, geological history and seasonal bird migration come together, while Suekhra is characterised by its oxbow landscape and summer recreation.

Alepino: Soloukhin, readings and museum programme

The V. A. Soloukhin Museum and Exhibition Centre in Alepino is dedicated to the writer’s life and work and opened to visitors in 2021. Traditional Soloukhin Readings have been held in Alepino since 1998. The programme includes literary discussions, exhibitions, concerts and master classes.

Reading competitions are held in the salon on the second floor of the Soloukhin Museum; visitors can play a historic grand piano there. The museum also holds the annual “Pancake Art” cooking competition, which visitors can enter or attend as guests. “Pets” is also part of the museum programme. The museum offers horseback rides on its grounds. A guided tour continues with a walk through Alepino to the writer’s childhood home.

A candle-making workshop at the Museum and Exhibition Centre is intended for adults and children: participants can make scented candles and candles from beeswax sheets. Before your trip, check with the museum for the current dates of the readings and competitions, as well as the availability of the programme and horseback rides. Also ask about tour arrangements and how to book the workshop.

Orekhovo: Zhukovsky’s legacy and the estate’s history

A Zhukovsky Museum has been housed at the estate in Orekhovo since 1937. It focuses on N. E. Zhukovsky’s life and scientific work, as well as the development of aviation and spaceflight. The eleven halls comprise seven rooms in the memorial complex and four presenting his scientific legacy. Themed tours cover Zhukovsky’s life and work, the history of aviation and spaceflight, and the history of the estate; ask about current availability.

The historic estate ensemble of the Zhukovsky family included a modest plastered wooden house, wings, greenhouses, stables, a linden park and a birch avenue leading to the property. In 1911–1912, an extension with a balcony and terrace was added to the west façade of the manor house. In Orekhovo, the museum’s themes and the estate’s recorded history therefore sit side by side, without implying that historic features are the same as present-day facilities.

Cherkutino: Manor house and Mikhail Speransky Museum

General Ivan Saltykov had the manor house in Cherkutino built in the Annen Baroque style. The historic estate included a rectangular park and three cascading ponds. The Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God, built in 1801, no longer survives; its bell tower and the former priest’s house can still be seen. The Mikhail Speransky Museum is housed in the former priest’s house.

The exhibition includes copies of documents about Speransky’s life, his major work—the Code of Laws of the Russian Empire—and everyday objects from that period. The museum offers guided tours and various events for adults and children. A virtual tour using a VR headset and an app brings Cherkutino’s historic centre at the beginning of the 19th century to life: visitors see Prince Nikolai Saltykov’s estate, the village churches and the present-day museum building. Check the current availability of guided tours, events and the virtual tour before your visit.

The estate complex of the Vsevolozhsky-Obolensky family in Zherekhovo is also among the cultural sites of Sobinskiy District. It is included in the register of cultural heritage sites of Vladimir Oblast.

When choosing your holiday apartment, first decide whether lakes and bird migration, Soloukhin’s literature, Zhukovsky’s history of science, or Speransky’s museum and estate history will shape your stay. If you plan to visit several places, check the routes involved before choosing where to stay.
